Overview

You see, we know that in today's job market, you're often required to wear plenty of different hats. That's why we've allowed you to customize your path to a master's degree by blending two areas of expertise. How do we do it? It's simple really. You'll choose two out of several approved graduate certificate programs, which include topics from Business Analytics to Teaching Multilingual Learners to Global Health and more.

Altogether, you'll be required to complete 30 credit hours, which will include the courses in both certificates plus a final Capstone Experience to demonstrate your mastery of the subjects. Whether or not you earn an MA or an MS depends on the certificates chosen. In the end, our goal is for you to graduate with a knowledge and skill set that is as unique as you are—and that will propel you toward success.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham offers two master’s degrees in Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies (IGS): The Master of Arts and the Master of Science. Both IGS degrees are designed to provide students with opportunities to blend two areas of expertise in order to best meet the needs of contemporary hybrid careers. The IGS degree allows students to personalize a master’s degree to align with their professional, academic, and personal goals. Students may choose to combine any two (2) UAB graduate certificates that have affiliated with the IGS program in order to gain knowledge and skills they want as they seek professional advancement or personal development.
