Graduates of our Biomedical Engineering program at The University of Alabama at Birmingham create unique innovations in health-care delivery, medical devices, biomedical imaging, instrumentation, and beyond.

Overview

To prepare you for your career or a doctoral program, we want research to be a big part of your education. That's why your courses will be selected in consultation with a thesis advisor and approved by the biomedical engineering graduate program committee.

 As part of your curriculum, you'll learn about topics such as engineering analysis, statistical methods, and quantitative physiology, while you research areas like biomedical imaging, biomedical implants and devices, cardiac electrophysiology, multi-scale computational modeling, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. In the end, you'll present your research at a scientific or technical conference and publish at least one peer-reviewed manuscript.

General requirements

  • Applicants to the MSBME program should have earned a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, engineering, or a closely-related field. Students with undergraduate degrees in the physical sciences, life sciences, or mathematics will also be considered for admission; however, such students must demonstrate competence in engineering areas usually found in an undergraduate engineering curriculum. In some cases, preparatory courses in engineering may be required, with specific recommendations made by the BME Graduate Program Director.
  • Successful applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of 3.5 or higher. Scores on the GRE General Test will be accepted but are not required for the 2020-2021 academic year. International students should follow the UAB Graduate Schoo's guidelines on English language proficiency.
