Overview

The Philosophy (research) programme of the University of Amsterdam is the most extensive of its kind in the Netherlands and attracts students from all over the world. It is highly regarded in terms of research and teaching quality and consistently voted best in the Netherlands in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. The programme familiarises you with one or more sub-areas of philosophy. It covers a wide range of topics and perspectives, and has a strong international focus. Both Anglo-Saxon and European philosophy are studied. You can choose to specialise in one of the following areas:

Philosophy and Public Affairs

Logic and Language

You acquire the skills to formulate, analyse and discuss philosophical problems, as well as to formulate and present targeted research questions within a broader research plan. The programme offers an excellent opportunity to students who are interested in pursuing a PhD in Philosophy.

Careers

Graduates of the Research Master's in Philosophy will be familiar with one or more of the sub-areas of philosophy and will have the skills to formulate, analyse and discuss philosophical problems. They will also be able to formulate and present targeted research questions within a broader research plan. The Research Master's programme Philosophy prepares students for postgraduate studies and/or independent research.

General requirements

A Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from an accredited university, as well as to students with a Bachelor's degree in a programme other than Philosophy from an accredited university, provided that it includes a set of units of study in philosophy accounting for at least 60 ECTS (the equivalent of approximately one year of full-time academic studies) that meets the following requirements:

The units of study cover multiple subdisciplines of philosophy;

Several units of study have been taken at an advanced level;

At least one of the units of study has been completed with a substantial philosophical and scientific essay.
