What does this Governance of radicalism, extremism and terrorism MSc programme at Leiden University entail?

Radicalism, extremism and terrorism are phenomena that rank high on the security agenda. By studying the historical and current manifestations of radicalism, extremism and terrorism and the social and political dynamics related to these phenomena, you will acquire the analytical skills necessary to assess the emergence of (potentially) violent movements and actors, as well as state and societal responses to them and their (unintended) consequences.

In this track you will

• Be familiarized with academic research on manifestations of politically-oriented activism, extremism and violence;
• Study the formation of protest movements, (new) cleavages in society, group dynamics within protest movements, interactions and conflicts with authorities and the broader social, political, economic, technological and ideological environment.
• Study historical and current manifestations of radicalism, extremism and terrorism and thus acquire the analytical skills necessary to assess dynamics leading to the emergence of (potentially) violent movements and actors, as well as state and social responses to them and their (unintended) consequences;
• Study and discuss the actors, strategies and practices engaged in preventing, detecting and responding to political violence and terrorism;
• Be familiarized by using a government perspective with the main challenges of multi-actor security networks and study the role of society, media and citizens in dealing with (violent) protest and the political, organizational and ethical challenges of the governance of radicalism, extremism and terrorism.
