What does this Governance of radicalism, extremism and terrorism MSc programme at Leiden University entail?
Radicalism, extremism and terrorism are phenomena that rank high on the security agenda. By studying the historical and current manifestations of radicalism, extremism and terrorism and the social and political dynamics related to these phenomena, you will acquire the analytical skills necessary to assess the emergence of (potentially) violent movements and actors, as well as state and societal responses to them and their (unintended) consequences.
In this track you will
- Be familiarized with academic research on manifestations of politically-oriented activism, extremism and violence;
- Study the formation of protest movements, (new) cleavages in society, group dynamics within protest movements, interactions and conflicts with authorities and the broader social, political, economic, technological and ideological environment.
- Study historical and current manifestations of radicalism, extremism and terrorism and thus acquire the analytical skills necessary to assess dynamics leading to the emergence of (potentially) violent movements and actors, as well as state and social responses to them and their (unintended) consequences;
- Study and discuss the actors, strategies and practices engaged in preventing, detecting and responding to political violence and terrorism;
- Be familiarized by using a government perspective with the main challenges of multi-actor security networks and study the role of society, media and citizens in dealing with (violent) protest and the political, organizational and ethical challenges of the governance of radicalism, extremism and terrorism.

- In this MSc you gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become a professional researcher in a security or crisis related field; a civil servant at a security, defense, or foreign or internal affairs institution; or to be a private sector professional advising other institutions on these issues.
- Regardless of your focus this degree provides you with the practical and theoretical tools to tackle emerging security/crisis issues through a governance perspective.

- If you have a bachelor’s degree in Security Studies are always eligible for direct admission. You can register through Studielink.
- If you have a bachelor’s degree in Safety and Security Management Studies (The Hague University of Applied Sciences) and have fulfilled specific academic and administrative criteria, your application to the Msc programme ‘Crisis and Security Management’ of Leiden University will be accepted. Please note: you will have to apply through Studielink and the subsequent uSis application portal.
