The use of Geographical Information Systems and Spatial Planning programme offered by the University of Porto has been registering, over the last decade, a significant increase in spatial planning, which is materialized by the adoption of this technology in areas as diverse as: environment, transportation, water supplying and waste treatment, agriculture, civil protection, among many others.


One can say that the GIS are a transverse tool, whose employment has generalized to all activity sectors, where location, associated to mobility, are important factors of work rationalization and productivity gains. This course will develop specific competences to answer these new challenges.


The aims of the Geographical Information Systems and Spatial Planning course at the University of Porto are grouped in four great parameters:

  • Disciplinary scientific education: to promote the deepening of knowledge in the cartography, geographical information systems; and in the scope of planning and spatial planning, to apply explicative models and diagnosis methodologies and to propose territorial intervention areas;
  • Multidisciplinary scientific education: to promote interdisciplinarity and transversality of knowledge;
  • Adaptation capacities: to train post-graduates to face and to solve new problems creatively, showing adaptation capacities to the fast changes in the current world;
  • Personal training: To improve time and resource management capacity;
  • To solidify the structuring of reason and thought, the identification and formalization capacity and to develop of a critical mind;
  • To improve oral and written communication, group work and intercultural and interpersonal relationship skills.

GMAT admission requirements GMAT The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a test intended to assess certain analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in written English for use in admission to a graduate management program, such as an MBA. GMAT contains 4 sections - Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative and Verbal. The score has a range from 200 - 800.

English requirements

IELTS admission requirements IELTS The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).
TOEFL admission requirements TOEFL® IBT The TOEFL iBT® is given online through the internet at desiganated testing site. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.
PTE Academic admission requirements PTE Academic PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a language test that enables students to demonstrate their writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills when applying to study in English. The score refers to a total score which ranges between 10 and 90.

General requirements

  • Hold a bachelors degree or legal equivalent in one of the areas specified by the school/faculty;
  • Hold a foreign higher education degree that is in accordance with the Bologna process or that may be recognised by the U.Porto as satisfying the requirements of a bachelors degree;
  • Have an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that the U.Porto recognises as proof of ability to complete the course of study.
