Overview
This Master’s programme is meticulously crafted to train postgraduate students in utilising statistical methods for conducting data-driven research across the social sciences and humanities. It aims to foster an interdisciplinary approach, preparing students for the burgeoning field of Data Science, which is increasingly vital for enhancing service delivery and boosting a competitive knowledge economy in South Africa. As part of the DSTI-funded National e-Science Postgraduate Teaching and Training Platform (NEPTTP), students will begin their coursework at Wits University in Johannesburg during the first year. Following the completion of their coursework modules, they will return to their Home Institutions for the second year of study. This unique structure not only facilitates a diverse learning experience but also encourages collaboration with various industry partners.
The Master's programme extends over a period of 18 to 24 months of full-time study, ensuring that students receive a comprehensive education that encompasses both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The curriculum is designed to align with national priorities, thereby contributing to the development of a skilled workforce adept in data science methodologies.

SyllabusThe curriculum consists of both compulsory and elective modules, allowing for a comprehensive educational experience. Students must complete modules totalling 180 credits, which include:
- Research Methods and Capstone Project in Data Science (15 credits)
- Data Privacy and Ethics (15 credits)
- Statistical Computing and Inference for the Social Sciences and Humanities (30 credits)
- Statistical Modelling for the Social Sciences and Humanities (15 credits)
- Applied Data Science for the Social Sciences and Humanities (15 credits)
- Research Report: Data Science (90 credits) - Year 2 at Home Institution

General requirements
- Applicants are required to have a Bachelor’s degree with Honours (NQF level 8 qualification) from a relevant discipline or field in the social sciences or humanities. Along with strong substantive knowledge in a relevant discipline or field, they must have a demonstrable knowledge of basic principles of quantitative social research (but need not have a previous specialisation in statistics or statistical computing).
- Applicants require a minimum of 65 percent in their NQF level 8 qualification to be considered, and they must fulfil any additional institutional application requirements of the institution through which they are applying, and must be co-approved by the Consortium.
