Overview
The MPhil in Sustainable Management at the Stellenbosch University comprises a thesis plus a minimum of two modules, and is presented over one year (full-time) or two years (part-time).
What we offer
At the SPL (School of Public Leadership) we prepare graduates for leading roles in public and civic organisations to tackle development and governance challenges.
Our graduates are equipped with the knowledge, competencies and values required to build sustainable African societies within a rapidly changing and complex world. Emphasis is placed on the ability of graduates to craft and facilitate an open civic public realm wherein dialogue and contestation can thrive thanks to a culture of tolerance, modisty, solidarity and compassion. To this end, the SPL's teaching, research, consulting and community interaction are designed to foster excellence, social entrepreneurship, reflexive leadership and effective management.
We excel in developing the competencies needed to work within complex, multidisciplinary networks and diverse operating environments.
After completion of the Post Graduate Diploma (PGD), students wishing to complete the Sustainable Development Planning specialisation (in order to work as planners in SA ), are advised to select the 120 credit thesis plus 4 electives option. It is recommended that these 4 additional modules are selected from the Sustainable Development Planning Stream of the PGD; or from the MPhil Environmental Management or HonsPA or MPA programmes delivered by SPL; or from the Masters of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) or the MPhil in Urban and Regional Science offered by the Centre of Regional and Urban Innovation and Statistical Exploration (CRUISE) which is part of the Geography and Environmental Studies Department in the Faculty of Arts. Besides the PGD modules , other specific electives that are recommended are Geographical Information Systems in Environmental Analysis and Management (or a similar GIS module), Project Management (SPL) and Urban Management Processes (CRUISE). The research component for the MPhil will also need to have a "Sustainable Development Planning" focus.
