Overview
Course Description
Engineering products and processes are becoming increasingly complex. Making these manageable and realisable is the task of systems engineering. Here, systems-thinking is becoming increasingly important. Customer requirements must be documented early on, development processes defined and design procedures structured in every detail, right up to the handover of the finished product – without losing sight of the overall concept.
The Systems Engineering and Management course at University of Applied Sciences Ulm is offered in four variants with different specialisation subjects for this reason. The three-semester Systems Engineering and Management program from University of Applied Sciences Ulm is the result of cooperation between multiple departments at Ulm University of Applied Sciences, with the goal of providing an attractive further qualification for Bachelor graduates of engineering degrees who are aiming for a future role in management.
In the specialisation “Electrical Engineering” (SYE), you will be taught advanced engineering expertise in hardware and software, as well as commercial knowledge, such as in finance and human resources.
Career prospects
Completion of the Master’s degree programme Systems Engineering and Management – Electrical Engineering will qualify you for challenging managerial roles in the research and development departments of innovative companies, as a project, group or department leader. In the role of a development manager, you will undertake interdisciplinary development projects and report directly to the management board or divisional management.
The tasks of a development manager encompass conceiving systems, calculating quotes, negotiating with customers, scheduling and staff planning, as well as overall project management including responsibility for staff. As well as qualifying you directly for a career, completion of the Master’s degree programme also entitles you to enter the civil service on the “höheren Dienst” career path and enables you to do a doctoral degree.
The most important sectors for graduates of this specialisation are electrical engineering and IT. Even today, these fields are characterised by a level of innovation which is far above average. Here, systems development is playing an increasingly important role. Potential careers are primarily in communications engineering, information technology and automation engineering.
Nowadays even the automotive industry, with its numerous supplier companies, is driven by electrical engineering, electronics and software. Currently, it is one of the largest employers in Electrical Engineering graduates. It is safe to assume that the sustained high rate of innovation – particularly in development and project work – will ensure favourable employment opportunities in the long term as well.
