Overview
The Conservation programme at The University of Hong Kong emphasises the integration of sustainability in conservation training, which enables students to address the growing risks and challenges facing built heritage conservation, including climate change, disasters, and various pressures from urbanisation, gentrification and tourism development.
Through a combination of dedicated seminars, studios and elective courses, students will gain theoretical and practical insights into the latest policies, methodologies and best practices and apply their knowledge to real-life projects.
Programme Highlights
- Learn about the latest heritage policies, frameworks and methodologies for built heritage conservation.
- Choose from one of the two streams of specialization: Conservation Planning and Management; and Design for Conservation.
- Gain insights into different types of heritage schemes in Hong Kong, Greater China and the Southeast Asian region.
- Acquire practical experience through individual and team-based studio projects.
- Develop communication skills to advocate conservation for local communities and engage with multiple sectors.
- Travel to an outstanding heritage site in the region.
Career Prospects
Graduates may take up professional positions in governments, NGOs, architectural and planning practices as well as heritage consultancies in Hong Kong, Mainland China and beyond. Graduates may also pursue further studies in the MPhil and PhD programmes at HKU and other reputable universities around the world.

- A bachelor or master's degree in a built environment-related discipline, including but not limited to architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, urban planning, urban design, surveying, engineering, archaeology, etc. Motivated candidates with a degree in other disciplines and with relevant working experience may also be eligible and they should contact the admission advisor before applying.
