Overview

The programme recognises that contemporary leadership and management are multifaceted and there is a need to draw upon numerous perspectives to have an impact in the current international sport business environment. This course is designed to introduce and bring together theories, styles and philosophies of leadership, provide an extensive understanding of business practices, and their practical application in the context of sport.

Developmental themes embedded within the programme relate to team work, sustainability, critical reflection, management development and leadership construction. This programme provides the foundation for individuals to develop their own leadership philosophy, extend their knowledge of the sport business industry, and critically reflect upon how they can be influential and effective leaders and managers in global sport. The course also provides opportunities to undertake applied research and develop leadership and management skills by helping solve real problems confronting sport businesses in the current landscape.

Learning experiences

Students will examine the rapid growth in the business of sport and its accompanying impacts in an era of significant social, economic and technological change. Through this examination you will be able to identify industry trends, understand customer needs, and establish and evaluate the organisational practices required to remain competitive in a global sport marketplace.

Students will enhance their understanding of leadership and business through on-location site visits at top sport organisations and other complementary leadership environments. In this format students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in various different management contexts and gain first-hand perspective from top leaders in their field. Previous locations include UK Sport, Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre, Google, the Royal Ballet, and the Royal Military Academy.

Students will explore the nexus between their leadership and business knowledge, work/life integration, and their own personal experiences and ambitions through a series of leadership retreat activities. This unique format allows for students to immerse themselves in the course content with a focus on developing their capacity for relationship management, problem solving, and strategies for approaching challenging environments.
