Overview
Key facts
The core focus of Biological Anthropology is Human Skeletal Remains recovered from Archaeological Sites. These human remains are found in different types of graves/tombs from any type of archaeological period. These remains can dates as early as 400,000 BC when Neanderthals first started to bury their dead; or when farming started in the Near East around 12.000 BC, or the beginning of state formation the Hittite Civilization; and until very recent historical periods.
The skeletal remains are analyzed to answer several questions that will help reconstruct diet, health and population affinities in the past. This is important especially when there are no written resources about our vast and long human past.
This new masters program in Biological Anthropology will be a unique study not only in Istanbul but all over Turkey, as this new type of study is highly specialized and not available everywhere in Turkey. This program is unique in its incorporation for the first time the Department of Genetics and Bioengineering at Yeditepe University, where laboratory research and DNA analysis will be conducted jointly. Students of this master program in Biological Anthropology will have hand-on training in the extraction and sequencing of DNA from human archaeological skeletal remains. This is most needed for the evaluation of age, sex in relation to paleopathological conditions that existed in the past; thus making it possible in the reconstruction of past populations’ diet and health.Programme Structure
