The Painting program at the University of Notre Dame seeks to foster individual development within the framework of contemporary practice by emphasizing historical, critical and aesthetic concerns.

Painting, with its many traditions, is a medium put to an extraordinary diversity of contemporary uses.. The M.F.A. in Painting at the University of Notre Dame is a three-year program that consists primarily of individual studio work and art history classes which culminate in a thesis exhibition. Graduate students work closely with faculty in a 1:1 ratio and formally interact with other M.F.A. students through exhibitions, studio practice and visiting artist seminars.

The University’s Mission Statement describes Notre Dame as a Catholic academic community of higher education. In Riley Hall and West lake Hall, we seek to build a creative community dedicated to the arts and based on mutual respect for all the members of the community.
