About

Increased molecular knowledge of the mechanisms of processes in the cell can lead to better medicines or new methods for combating diseases. Our MSc students in Life Science and Technology (LST) specifically learn to understand the molecular and structural chemical and biological aspects of disease-related processes and to apply chemical and biotechnological tools to the treatment of diseases.

Overview

Why study Life Science and Technology at Leiden University?

You can design your own tailor-made Life Science and Technology programme from Leiden University adjusted to your own interests and ambitions related to Life Sciences, biomedicine and Chemical Biology.

You have the possibility to be part of research training projects within the Faculty of Science, Leiden University Medical Center, Netherlands Cancer Institute, Erasmus Medical Center or abroad.

You will receive personal guidance by a mentor of choice, who is a member of one of our international and young research groups.

Life Science and Technology: the right master’s programme for you?

If you are interested in Life Science and you are looking for a programme with ample of opportunities to assemble your own study path, our Life Science and Technology programme is the right choice. The programme addresses societal problems on a molecular and cellular level. You can also choose a specialisation where you combine one year of Life Science and Technology research with one year of training in business, communication or education.

Career

The master’s degree Life Science and Technology is a stepping-stone for those graduates with the aspiration to pursue a PhD degree. Students with a desire to apply their life sciences and technology knowledge outside the university have good job possibilities in R&D departments in industry, business, public utility companies, teaching, consultancy and government bodies. Biotechnological-, food- and biopharmaceutical industries as well as healthcare and fundamental research institutions could be suitable employers. Many students eventually attain higher management positions.

Programme Structure

The MSc Life Science and Technology programme offers four specializations:

  • Life Science Research and Development: you follow a two-year programme focussed on a molecular and biomedical approach to Life Sciences to become an independent and creative scientist.
  • Life Science and Education (taught partly in Dutch): prepare yourself for a career in teaching chemistry and/or biology.
  • Life Science and Science Communication and Society: combine training in Life Sciences with courses in different aspects of science communication, such as journalism.
  • Life Science and Business Studies: combine training in Life Science and Technology with components in business and entrepreneurship.
