About

An embedded system is a combination of hardware systems (electrical engineering) and software systems (computer science) built into equipment that we don’t always recognize as being computerized, such as the systems that control a car’s anti-lock brakes, the automatic pilot of an aircraft or the sensors and filters used in processing plants. Embedded systems call for real-time operation, reliability, maintainability and cost-effectiveness, which places heavy demands on software (user interfaces, data processing, machine control) and hardware (I/O, Asics, DSP, FPGA).

The Embedded Systems Embedded Systems programme offered by the University of Twente (UT) University of Twente (UT) focuses on the design of embedded systems, e.g. system validation, quantitative evaluation of embedded systems, electronics, maths, embedded computer architecture and how to create a system on a chip. You’ll be challenged by topics ranging from control engineering, integrated circuit design and computer architecture, to communication networks, real-time operating systems and software engineering.

Career

The Master’s programme in Embedded Systems provides you with the knowledge and skills needed to understand the interaction of embedded systems within their physical and network environments. You’ll get to know all about resource-boundedness, dependability and approaches to systems design.

You can combine research and development in the R&D departments of companies. Think of radar technology (Thales), energy efficient solutions (NXP semiconductors, Nedap), latest technology for manufacturing integrated circuits (ASML). Embedded systems graduates also started their career at TNO, ProDrive, Benchmark Electronics, Recore Systems, etc.

Accreditation

The programme holds NVAO accreditation.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score:

    90

The TOEFL iBT ® measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The test has four sections (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), each with a score range of 0-30, for a total score range of 0-120. Read more about TOEFL iBT ®.

  • Minimum required score:

    6.5

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

  • Minimum required score (Grade C):

    180

C1 Advanced is a Cambridge English Qualification. It reports on the Cambridge English Scale between 142 and 210. You will receive a separate score for each of the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) and for Use of English. These five scores are averaged to give you an overall result for the exam. Universities and colleges may ask you to achieve a specific score, either overall or for a particular skill.

Note: degree programmes and applications may require a more specific minimum score for admission.
