Enschede city life
The largest city in Twente region and also a university city, most of the local attractions in Enschede are specially designed to satisfy young people’s tastes. You can visit modern museums, check out an amusement park and relax in an abundance of pubs and bars.
Major attractions in Enschede are:
- The Old Market Square – a local popular spot, where most events take place, especially in the week-end
- Rijksmuseum Twenthe (art museum)
- Museum Twentse Welle
- Grote Kerk – central church, the oldest building in the city
Take a promenade or go cycling around Volkspark, and check out the Planet Parc amusement park.
If you’re curious about a Dutch play or music performance, you can always go to Wilminktheater, Enschede's main theatre and concert hall.
In the evenings, you have a plethora of cool pubs, bars and clubs that you can check out. Whoever is a sports fan can support the local football team and attend and watch the annual marathon and ice hockey and speed skating sport events.
Since you are very close to the German border, you can always make a trip to the neighbouring country; for example, you can get to Münster in less than an hour and you are also around two hours away from Amsterdam and Eindhoven by train.
International atmosphere in Enschede
Apart from the significant number of international students, Enschede is home to a few minorities, mainly Turks, Moroccans, Germans and Iraqis.

Weather Enschede
In Enschede, winters tend to be less mild compared to other cities in the Netherlands. However, only occasional light snows occur in the cold season and the high temperatures during the day range around 3 – 4 °C (38 – 40 °F). In the summer, the average high temperatures are around 22 °C (72 °F), with July and August as the hottest months. Although Enschede is one of the driest places in the Netherlands, precipitation is evenly spread out over the year.
