Description
The Start-Up Bursaries are one-off, non-repayable awards available to students aged under 25 who are starting their first undergraduate degree at Bangor University. The bursaries are designed to assist students entering higher education from care or who are permanently estranged from their families by helping them cover essential study costs during their first year.
Benefits
The bursary provides £1,000 to help cover course-related expenses such as books, equipment, travel, and study aids. The award is paid once during the first year of study and does not need to be repaid.
Eligibility
- Must be under 25 years of age before starting the first undergraduate degree at Bangor University.
- Must be entering Bangor University from care or be permanently estranged from their family.
- Must complete a Student Finance application.
- Eligibility is assessed using evidence of care experience or estrangement provided to the relevant student finance organisation.

Application deadline
There is no separate application process. Eligible students are identified automatically based on the evidence of care experience or estrangement submitted with their Student Finance application. The bursary is paid once students are fully registered and their bank details have been confirmed.
