Leuven city life
Leuven’s urban life is mainly focused on the city centre, Oude Markt, the place where students prefer to spend their evenings socializing in cafes, bars, restaurants and other venues. However, during the weekends most students go home, so entertainment events usually are held on Thursdays. Local cuisine is attractive, as well as the rich offer of beverages. Grote Markt is also an entertainment hub.
Some of the city’s cultural hotspots are the M – Museum Leuven, the Higher Institute of Philosophy or the university library of Leuven. If you wish to take a walk around, you may admire the architecture of the Collegiate church, the city hall, Namestraat building, Fonske statue, the University Hall, the Totem statue or the Large Beguinage - a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Other outdoor destinations could be Abbey Park or Saint-Donatus Park. You may enjoy a quiet walk or a healthy ride with the bicycle. If you wish to visit the surroundings, you have easy access to Kessel-Lo town or even Brussels.
Leuven annually holds a summer rock festival called Marktrock and a winter cyclocross race.
International atmosphere in Leuven
Leuven has a small population, but around 10% of its inhabitants are international students. You have high chances of meeting young people from all cultures in Leuven but with whom you will share the achievement of a degree abroad.
Dutch-speaking locals are friendly to visitors and eager to show students more of Leuven’s traditions and culture.
Weather Leuven
The city of Leuven has a cool and sometimes windy weather, based on four seasons. Rainfall usually appears, especially in July, while May is the driest month. During winter, you may notice occasional frost or snowfalls. Temperatures range from 1°C (33.8°F) in winter and 23°C (73.4°F) in summer.
