Hong Kong SAR is a thriving region and popular destination for international students. In fact, Hong Kong is known for offering some of the best degrees in Business, Finance and Economics.
If you want to study in this booming financial and touristic hub, follow these university application steps:
1. Find a university to apply to in Hong Kong
Here are some of the top-ranked universities in Hong Kong:
- The University of Hong Kong

2. Learn where to submit your university application
Hong Kong doesn’t use a centralised application system. This means international students have to apply individually to the university (or universities) where they want to enrol.
It’s a good idea to apply to multiple universities, even if you’re confident in your application. It’s better to have more options than to regret later!
3. Meet the university entry requirements
Admission requirements and other criteria vary significantly from one institution or study programme to another. That being said, some of the most common prerequisites are:
- completed application form
- proof of paying the application fee (if applicable)
- high school diploma (to apply for a Bachelor’s)
- Bachelor’s diploma (to apply for a Master’s)
- proof of English proficiency
- transcript of records
- passport-sized photo(s)
- copy of valid passport and/or personal ID
- motivation letter
- letter(s) of recommendation
- personal statement
- (online) interview
Keep in mind that you’ll likely need to translate these documents in English before submitting them.
4. Find out about the language requirements
To study in Hong Kong, you need to display a certain level of English language skills. The most widely accepted tests are:
- IELTS Academic
- PTE Academic
- TOEFL iBT

5. Apply before the application deadlines
Deadlines for university application vary wildly based on the institution, the type of study programme, the number of applicants and so on.
In general, all applications should be submitted in spring because studies begin in early September and end in late May the following year.
That being said, some universities might allow late or fast track applications. Since these factors can change on a yearly basis, we recommend checking the official deadline on the study programme or university page.
6. Final steps after receiving your acceptance letter
- confirm your enrolment after receiving the acceptance letter/university offer
