History
Originally known as the Franco-British Guild, it was established in 1894 by Edith Williams, who came to the Sorbonne to train as a teacher of English. She succeeded in becoming the second-ever woman to receive the Agrégation d’anglais.
The Institute was incorporated into the University of London in 1969 and sits alongside the School of Advanced Study as a Central Institute of the University.

Student services
The University of London Institute in Paris is committed to providing a friendly and supportive environment.
The Student Services office sits directly as you enter the campus building. They are responsible for all administrative aspects over the student journey; this includes providing essential advice on healthcare, funding, visa applications, wellbeing support.
Housing services
Undergraduate students will predominantly stay in Nexity and Estudines private student halls in their First Year.
Postgraduate students use private rentals and the Cité Universitaire complex.
Library services
Students benefit from access to a wide range of study resources and facilities, including several libraries, electronic information services, and computing facilities. The main library is the primary source of support and research material for students, offering subject-specific resources and access to dozens of electronic databases.
ICT services
The Institute has support staff for all IT issues and questions.
IT support is provided through:
- In-person visits
- Helplines for staff and students
- Online guides to enable users to get the most from their computing facilities
- Training in IT skills for students
Medical services
Students have access to French national health cover, the Sécurité sociale, either through the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), or by registering to the Sécurité sociale directly.
Successful applicants receive detailed information in early summer on the basic level of health cover provided by the Sécurité sociale, as well as information on subscribing to additional health cover.
Campus life
The University is housed within a 19th-century building, characterised by its limestone façade, spiralling staircase, and high ceilings.
Located in the 7th arrondissement on the Rive Gauche, the campus overlooks the Esplanade des Invalides and the Eiffel Tower.
The Student Union is located on campus which has its own kitchen and social area.
Sports facilities
As we are a small campus students locate external sports facilities. This is a brilliant way of immersing within the Parisian community and attending national level events.
