The Institute has a long history of supporting French and British academic collaboration that pre-dates the Entente Cordiale – the historic agreement that significantly improved Anglo-French relations in 1904.
The University of London Institute in Paris was the brainchild of Miss Edith Williams, who came to the Sorbonne to train as a teacher of English.
Our long-established three-year French Studies programmes with or without Business, History or International Relations will allow you to connect to its live environment: Paris, France. It will enable you to become a near-native speaker, gain intercultural skills as well as international experience, and graduate with a prestigious University of London degree.
We offer a variety of postgraduate programmes in partnership with Queen Mary University of London, bringing their expertise to the heart of Paris.
ULIP offers a vibrant research environment, with our faculty deeply embedded in the cultural and intellectual environment of Paris while working in a number of close partnerships with both UK and French institutions. Individual staff research spans the forefront of contemporary modern-languages study and has been recognized in the past two assessment exercises as ‘internationally excellent’.
All ULIP students receive a free dedicated careers service through the Careers & Enterprise team at Queen Mary University of London. This careers service is part of the Careers Group,the largest university careers service in Europe, which provides products and services designed to help individuals achieve and maintain job satisfaction throughout their working lives.

Every student enrolled on a ULIP programme is assigned to a member of full-time academic staff who acts as their Personal Adviser throughout their chosen course of study. You are assigned to a Personal Adviser irrespective of whether they teach you. Sometimes it may actually help if they do not, simply because you can discuss your progress together with greater detachment. The Study Abroad Tutor acts as Personal Adviser to all Study Abroad Students.
There are many options to choose from when booking accommodation in Paris. Whatever your choice of accommodation our dedicated student services team is there to provide advice and guidance every step of the way.
ULIP has recently signed agreements with two specialised student accommodation agencies in Paris, for more information click here. We also act as a guarantor for students enrolled on ULIP programmes to help them secure accommodation with private landlords.
Paris offers an extensive choice of public and institutional libraries, as well as specialist collections, which can complement your studies. Several general and specialist university, public, and private libraries are within close proximity to ULIP, and many have substantial holdings in English.

Paris has been a thriving student city since the Sorbonne was established circa 1253. It now has 13 French universities and over 50 other Higher Education institutions. There are currently 200,000 students living in Paris, of whom a quarter come from outside France. More than half live in central Paris, and are concentrated on the left bank of the Seine, where the Institute is located.As one of the most exciting and stimulating cities in the world, it is an ideal place to immerse yourself in the French language and culture.

I really enjoyed my experience at the University of London Institute in Paris. I was able to study abroad at no extra cost which enabled me experience a different culture and way of life. One aspect that I believe should be improved is the ability to do a masters at the university and receive the same funding as one would receive in the United Kingdom.
This small university allows for extreme specialisation mixed with a completely immersive 3 year language BA that prepares students to go on to take an MA in a variety of language disciplines.
