UCD School of Philosophy is the largest teaching and research centre for Philosophy in Ireland. The School was rated one of the top schools in the English-speaking world for graduate studies in Twentieth-Century Continental Philosophy. We offer a broad range of research and teaching interests. Our faculty have published widely in the history of philosophy, political philosophy.

History

UCD School of Philosophy has been an integral part of University College Dublin since its foundation in 1854 by John Henry Newman. UCD School of Philosophy has flourished and made a substantial contribution philosophy in Ireland and beyond. The graduate programmes in Philosophy have been educating students for decades.

Education

We are unique in the broad range of research and teaching interests we offer. Our areas of expertise include Contemporary European (Continental) Philosophy, Analytic Philosophy, History of Philosophy, Philosophy of Law, Political Philosophy and Cognitive Science. Our members of staff have published widely in the history of philosophy, political philosophy, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and are prominent in international academic circles. Unlike many other internationally recognised departments, we also offer a friendly and open atmosphere where students and staff regularly interact and exchange ideas in discussion groups and coffee mornings.

Research

Our size and our range of diverse interests provide an exciting learning experience for undergraduates and graduates. Indeed, UCD School of Philosophy is known for its vibrant intellectual atmosphere. We hold numerous international conferences and workshops, figures such as Noam Chomsky, Hilary Putnam, Judith Butler, John McDowell, Alasdair MacIntyre, Charles Taylor and Jürgen Habermas have been regular visitors to the School.

Career

Philosophy graduates work in diverse fields including business, public-sector management, marketing and advertising, media and broadcasting, recruitment and human resources. Graduates of UCD School of Philosophy have continued to have successful academic careers in Ireland, UK and the US. Others are prominent playwrights, journalists, human-rights activists, broadcasters, film-makers and musicians.

Housing services

On campus accommodation is available in newly built modern apartment style accommodation. UCD also provides assistance to students who wish to find off-campus alternatives.

Library services

UCD has one of the largest libraries in Ireland. The skilled philosophy librarians at UCD are available to assist students in finding resources, both electronic and hard copies, for their studies and research.

ICT services

UCD is a connected campus with free Wi-Fi and supported IT labs available throughout campus. Classes make use of online material to enhance the student experience as well.

Medical services

Students have access to the UCD Student Health Service on campus. UCD is also located near a large teaching hospital.

Campus life

UCD School of Philosophy is located on the main Belfield campus of University College Dublin, approximately 4km south of the city centre of Dublin. On campus facilities include several restaurants, a supermarket, sports facilities, barber, cinema, theatre, sports pitches, and woodland trails.
