RUC was originally established in order to challenge academic traditions and to experiment with new ways to create and acquire knowledge. RUC cultivates a project and problem oriented approach to knowledge creation, because we believe that the most relevant results are obtained by solving real problems in collaboration with others.

Roskilde University was formed under the Act of Copenhagen University's Siting and University Centres of 1970. The Act was passed only after a great deal of debate between the conservative-liberal coalition government in power at the time and the opposition. Roskilde University opened its doors to students, 723 of them, on 1 September 1972.

The education of the future is project and problem-oriented.

Future graduates from RUC will contribute to a society in which the creation of value and knowledge will be increasingly achieved through collaboration across businesses, organizations, government agencies, teams and individuals worldwide. This will require very specialised competencies. It is not sufficient that students acquire the highest level of expertise within their subject areas. They must also develop the ability to bring their academic knowledge effectively into play with others.

The University's research is organized into six Departments that are characterised by multi-disciplinary approaches across traditional discipline boundaries. The research has a special focus on responding to societal needs for knowledge and addressing complex issues in more holistic ways than is typically the case with traditional single disciplinarity.

The hippie university
Anonymous rated 5 out of 5 stars
My fellow students are open-minded. I've truly felt part of a broader community, where I've been able to express myself freely - allowing my critical mind to blossom. One minus is its anarchic administration. It is a hippie university, after all.
