Savonia University of Applied Sciences is one the largest and most versatile Universities of Applied Sciences in Finland. The Emergency Services College is supervised by the Ministry of the Interior and the College provides vocational training to supply labour for the rescue services and emergency response centres. In addition, the College provides preparedness training for disturbances in normal conditions and emergency conditions as well as for international civil crisis management tasks.
The Emergency Services College is involved in the research and development functions in the field. The College is also responsible for maintaining the assignment register of the rescue services (PRONTO) and the central library of the rescue field.
TrainingThe Emergency Services College provides training aiming at vocational qualification in the following training programmes:
- Fire Fighter
- Emergency Response Centre Operator
- Sub-Officer
- Fire Officer, Bachelor of Engineering
The Fire Officer's Training Programme is arranged in cooperation with Savonia University of Applied Sciences.
The purpose to conduct in-service training for the personnel in the rescue services and emergency response centres is to ensure that these organisations have access to the best possible knowledge and skills to maintain the standard of the services they provide. We arrange further education also for people employed in business life.
Further, the Emergency Services College is the leading provider of preparedness training for the authorities in our country. Our customers are ministries, central government offices, provincial offices and municipalities among others.
We also provide training for persons who are going abroad to work with international task concerning rescue services and civil crisis management.
StudentsApproximately 400-500 students study at the Emergency Services College. The amount of students varies from time to time as a part of the studies may be distance studies. About 15 % of the students are women. The accommodation and the meals are free of charge for the students.
FacilitiesMost of the theoretical training is conducted at the College facilities which are located in Petonen, a suburb 10 km south of Kuopio. There are most of the class rooms, simulators, work rooms as well as the dormitory, Course Hotel, equipment hall, canteen and the sports hall and gym. The training ground, which is especially designed for emergency training, is located 10 km away from the College in Korvaharju. Classroom
Classroom/The Training GroundMost of the practical training is conducted on the 38-hectar-wide training ground. There are different kinds of training fields, special-purpose buildings and class rooms there. The students train in conditions as close as possible to real emergencies, for example to extinguish various kinds of fires, to carry out rescue assignments, prevent chemical accidents, driving emergency vehicles as well as giving first aid to injured and ill patients. The training ground is also used for joint disaster exercises of the authorities.
The training ground has been designed to minimize the effects on the environment. It can also be used by organisations arranging safety training.
Members of StaffThe Emergency Services College employs 100 employees and about 70% of them are teachers. The amount of women is approximately 25 %. Among our employees there are specialists in emergency medical care, emergency response centre operations and civil defence work. The employees are encouraged to professional development and especially to develop competence in international interaction.
HistorySystematic training of fire officers in the rescue field started on 26 March, 1935 when the Fire Officers School was founded in Helsinki. At first, the fire brigade organisations were responsible for the training, but then the state took over and the State Fire School was established in Espoo in 1958.
The training of fire fighters started in 1969 and the first fire foreman class graduated in 1972. The educational tasks expanded to comprise also civil defence training when the Training Centre of Emergency Administration was established in 1979. The field of emergency training expanded further in 1981 as the training of dispatchers of the district alarm centres started.
Here in Kuopio the training started in 1992 as the State Emergency College. Then the State Rescue College, which was responsible for the training of fire fighters and sub-officers, and the State Emergency College, which was responsible for the training of fire officers and civil defence subjects, were merged and the present Emergency Services College started in 1995.
Iisalmi CampusThe multidisciplinary school of higher professional education in Iisalmi was nominated as a Centre of Excellence in Polytechnic Education in 2008-2009 (Development of entrepreneurship in the Degree Programme in Agriculture and Rural Development) and in 2002-2003 (Student counselling in the Degree Programme in Social Services). It provides education in various degree programmes conducted in Finnish leading to a Bachelor of Natural Resources, Bachelor of Health Care, or Bachelor of Social Services degree. In adult education it is also possible to complete studies with the degree titles Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Engineering. Furthermore, studies awarding a Master-level degree are arranged in the fields of natural resources as well as social services and health. In addition, we offer specialised and Open University studies and various types of continuing and further education courses.
RDI activitiesRDI in the competence clusters of Savonia is closely linked with education and studies. It serves and supports the needs of Northern Savo in competitiveness and internationalisation. R&D&I activities focus on developing wellbeing services, rural industries and innovation systems in the area.

The founders of the college in 1884 would undoubtedly never have guessed that Kuopio Academy of Design would, in 120 years, be an eminent national institution dedicated to the teaching of design and graphic design, and that it would have wide international contacts. The handicraft school has grown into an expert, an initiator of research and development projects and a centre of knowledge and know-how.
The primary mission at the Kuopio Academy of Design is to provide and develop high-level education in design and graphic design; to research, develop, support and market these fields and to serve as a databank.
In accordance with the Kuopio Academy of Design vision, the aim of research and development is to examine the relationships between user, product and use environments and to apply this research in product development. The objective inspired by this vision is to enhance well-being through professional design and graphic design by developing experiential and functional product environments and services.

The largest campus of Savonia UAS is the base of approximately 2000 students of engineering and business and administration. Education provided in these two fields has a long tradition and a history of more than 100 years in Kuopio.
EducationOpistotie campus provides an extensive range of educational opportunities: we offer full degree programmes leading to a Bachelor- or Master-level degree as well as training to develop professional skills through specialised and Open University studies, and other courses of continuing and further education.

Business and AdministrationIn the degree programmes conducted in Finnish it is possible to take the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration or Master of Business Administration. Education is focused on marketing, financial accounting and finance as well as management and entrepreneurship. The degree programme conducted in English trains international trade experts with a focus on International Business Studies awarding a BBA.
In our international BBA programme, students are also given a chance to participate in international activities and various projects with an aim to give an opportunity to get knowledge and gain skills needed in an international career and to contribute to the internationalisation of SMEs. In addition, the students acquire skills in doing applied business research.
The degree programme qualifies the graduates for working independently in various international duties including planning and specialist tasks as well as R & D work. In international operations they can have e.g. sales, administrative, financial and import/export duties.
Opistotie Campus is a truly international one with students from all over the world. Furthermore, we also have numerous international partner institutions around the world, so you can widen your internationality with an exchange student period. Engineering and TechnologyThe degree programmes conducted in Finnish cover a wide range of educational opportunities. All the major fields of engineering provide education either in degree programmes or specialisation options. The degree programmes leading to a Bachelor of Engineering include: ICT, electronics, electrical engineering, construction engineering, wood technology, environmental technology, and mechanical and production engineering. It is also possible to graduate with a Masters degree.
An international student can apply to Savonia UAS, School of Engineering and Technology in Kuopio to complete the degree programme in Information Technology. The studies will take 4 years awarding a Bachelor of Engineering (Information Technology) degree.
The degree programme prepares students for careers in information technology, electronics, computing, automation and telecommunication industries. The duties may range from hardware and software design to management and operation of plants and industries, consulting, product support and marketing.

Kuopio Academy of Music and Dance
Kuopio Academy of Music and Dance is part of multidisciplinary Savonia University of Applied Sciences. The academy provides advanced degree-level education for teachers of music and dance.
Our operational intent is to maintain and develop the national and international cultures of music and dance, prepare versatile professionals for the needs of working life, and produce cultural services that promote societal well-being. Our student-driven working approach is based on interactive processes whose goal is to instill within students a sense of independence combined with an awareness of community responsibility. Graduating teachers obtain comprehensive pedagogical training in music or dance as well as the practical skills required for their sectors various job tasks. The training also provides the preparedness for lifelong learning, internationality and professional development.
EducationThe curriculums profile is emphatically career-oriented. At the same time students are encouraged to develop their creativity and search for their own artistry. We train employable experts who have the ability to function successfully with colleagues in other artistic disciplines. We strive to respond quickly to the transformations taking place in the cultural environment and the new expectations arising as a result. Sairaalakatu CampusSavonia UAS combines two different fields of education on its Sairaalakatu campus in Kuopio, where health professions coexist with tourism and hospitality. Both the teaching staff experts and students of these two fields collaborate in education and R&D&I activities together with the partners in working life. The multidisciplinary and international campus has an active role in the development of the private and public sector organisations in the area. Sairaalakatu campus is situated right by the city centre in the beautiful park area of Valkeisenlampi. This educational institution has trained professionals for over 100 years on the same location. RDI activitiesRDI activities on Sairaalakatu campus meet the challenges of working life. We actively develop know-how and competence of the region within tourism, hospitality, wellbeing, and health together with our multi-field network of partners. Furthermore, students final projects and other project-form studies are an integral part of our research and development.
R&D in health focuses on wellbeing of the elderly and families with children, prevention and treatment of diabetes, safety, as well as technological solutions in wellbeing and education. In addition, within tourism and hospitality our research and development activities are directed to consumer behaviour, wellbeing, event tourism, and current trends in business and service process management.
International activitiesOn Sairaalakatu campus we place special emphasis on developing the scope of internationality. The various forms of international activities include student and trainee exchange, staff and expert exchange, intensive courses abroad, and international R&D projects.
