SECL offers an extensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that encompasses European cultural life. We offer a range of single-honours degrees as well as joint-honours programmes, combining subject areas within the School, the Faculty of Humanities or other parts of the University.

History

The School of European Culture and Languages (SECL) is one of the largest academic schools at the University of Kent.

SECL has long-standing links and exchange agreements with some of Europe’s most prestigious institutions, is the founder of both Kent's Paris School of Arts and Culture and Rome School of Classical and Renaissance Studies, as well as an MA in Heritage Management in Athens.

Education

The School offers an extensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that cover European cultural life in the following areas: Classical & Archaeological Studies, Comparative Literature, English Language & Linguistics, Modern Languages (including French, German, Hispanic Studies, Italian and European Studies), Philosophy and Religious Studies. We offer a range of single-honours degrees as well as joint-honours degree programmes combining subject areas within the School, the Faculty of Humanities or other parts of the University.

Research

The School of European Culture and Languages brings together researchers who study social and cultural life across a wide range of historical and contemporary contexts. Across its six Departments, there are shared interests in Western and Eastern philosophy, literature and film, language, cultural and literary theory, cultural history, the study of modernity, embodiment and the medical humanities, and material culture.
