History
Principal Heaton took up the position as head of Physics and Mathematics, which he held for 35 years. In 1919 the Physics and Mathematics schools were separated. Professor Barton became head of the Physics department and Dr Piaggio, formerly senior lecturer, was appointed as the first professor of the new Department of Mathematics.
Research
The environment and facilities for carrying out research are among the best in the country. Many of our researchers use computational methods, and make good use of the University's 1000 node GRID computing facility. The School houses the Research Centre in Mathematical Medicine and Biology which focus on specific fields and foster collaborations and joint activities with other disciplines.

Catered - On campus there is mainly catered accommodation available, which includes the provision of all student meals. Self-Catered – These are located a few minutes walk from University Park campus, and are self contained flats with shared kitchens and living areas.
Library services
As well as the main University Library there is also a dedicated science library. Situated opposite the Mathematical Sciences building it contains many specialist mathematical texts.
Medical services
The campus benefits from a Health Centre and Dentist specifically for students.
Campus life
University Park Campus is located in an idyllic setting of 330 acres. Set in extensive greenery and around a lake the campus is widely regarded as one of the largest and most attractive in the country.
Sports facilities
On campus there is a fully equipped sports centre, which include a swimming pool, gym as well as indoor and outdoor sports pitches.
