History
- The Geography department was established in 1934, although degrees in geography had first been awarded in 1922 under the auspices of a combined Geology and Geography department of the then University College Nottingham.
- The department became a school in August 1998. The current (2017-2021) Head of School is Matthew Smallman Raynor.
Education
The field of geography is very broad and we teach right across this spectrum, offering undergraduate, postgraduate taught, and postgraduate researchcourses, with subjects ranging from flooding to financial crises and areas of study from Italy to India.
Research
The School of Geography has laboratories dedicated to the physical and chemical analysis of sediments and water. These are complemented by research quality light microscopes which are available for approved projects.

Campus life
The School is located at the centre of University Park Campus which has many facilities including a swimming pool and large sports centre, playing fields, restaurants and coffee shops, bars, shops, and halls of residence.
The School of Geography shares the large and well-equipped Sir Clive Granger Building with the School of Economics. In addition to lecture theatres, seminar rooms, a coffee/snack bar, and meeting areas, the school provides a range of more specialised facilities.
