History
The establishment of the Centre for Renewable Energy was authorized through the Rector’s Office’s establishment resolution in December 2006, the Senate’s resolution on February 14th, 2007, and the Council’s statement on March 19th, 2007.
Education
The international Master Programme „Renewable Energy Engineering and Management“ combines a wide-range of qualification in all disciplines of renewable energy with profound knowledge acquired in an elective track (Energy Systems Technology, Energy Conversion, Environmental Planning and Management) and extensive training in the management of renewable energies. The program is offered by the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources in cooperation with the Faculty of Engineering.
The new master course "Photovoltaics" is an on-the job distance-learning programme of the ZEE in cooperation with the faculty of engineering of Freiburg University and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems.
Research
The ZEE cross-links partners’ applied fundamental research in the fields of solar energy, biomass, geothermal energy, energy efficiency and new energies with regards to practical research and development. It creates synergies and enables high-ranking research clusters.

Good advice does not have to be expensive! In fact at Student Services it is even free! Our counselling services provide support and attend to individual students’ needs.
Housing services
Student Services offers 4,000 residencies within 15 different dormitories throughout the region of Freiburg. The low rent, friendly neighbour’s and diverse recreational activities make these accommodations very popular. The living situation is usually mixed but studio and larger apartments are also available.
Library services
With a collection of 3.6 million volumes, the University Library is the largest research library in the region of Southern Baden. In addition, the UB and the University Computing Center run the New Media Center, which offers a variety of multimedia services. The University Librarys main purpose is to supply 20,000 employees and students with literature and information.
ICT services
The Computing Center is the central IT competence center of the university. It provides a broad spectrum of information and communication services and an efficient, modern IT infrastructure for instruction and research.
Medical services
The main clinical campus is situated in the western part of the city between the Stühlinger and Beurbarung districts.The off-campus clinics of the Psychiatry and Dermatology Departments are located in the city district of Herdern on Hauptstraße.The Medical Theoretical Institutes are also located in the city district of Herdern in the Institute Quarter of the University.
Accreditation
The teaching concept is based on a well-balanced blend of on-campus instruction and e-learning. Only shortly after its inception in 2006, the degree program received full accreditation and was accepted to the DAAD funding program "Postgraduate Degree Programs on Developing Countries at Universities in the Federal Republic of Germany."
