Education

Our aims are:

  • To provide a high quality education which prepares students for further study and research in physics and for a wide range of career opportunities in industry and commerce
  • To maintain an environment in a research-active department in which staff are committed to teaching physics as a coherent and challenging subject
  • To support teaching and learning with well-equipped laboratory, library and computing facilities
  • To monitor, review and enhance educational provision to ensure that it remains intellectually demanding and relevant to current needs of physics graduates
  • To provide the support and guidance that students need, and to encourage them to take on responsibility for their educational development

Research

The School has research interests which cover almost all of modern physics, and each year about 200 papers are published in research journals. We make extensive use of national and international research facilities such as CERN in Geneva. In the most recent research assessment exercise (RAE 2008), 85% of the School's research was rated as of international quality, with 20% world-leading. The volume of world-leading and internationally excellent research places the School 5th in the UK.

Student services

The International Team offers support and guidance for international students, sponsors and other organisations over a range of University matters.

The team is subdivided into the International Office and the International Relations department.

The International Office:
  • implements marketing plans for countries;
  • leads on overseas recruitment activities and the conversion of international students;
  • liaises with overseas agents;
  • provides guidance on international qualifications.

Housing services

Living in University accommodation gives our international students security and their family back home peace of mind. What's more, we offer guaranteed accommodation to international students who meet certain criteria.

As an international student coming to Manchester for the first time, you’ll benefit from the opportunity to live and study alongside British students, in a safe and welcoming environment.

With over 8,000 rooms, we offer a variety of types, costs and locations. Much of our accommodation is very near to the main University buildings and all of it is within two miles (three kilometres) of our campus.

Library services

Self-service machines are located on Blue Ground floor and within the High Demand collection at the Main Library.

There are also machines at Joule, Precinct and Stopford site libraries.

You will need your Library card and PIN.

Instructions for using the self-issue machines are displayed on the touch screens but please do ask a member of Library staff for help if you need it.

ICT services

We provide free WiFi for all staff, students and visitors at The University of Manchester:

  • eduroam - Automatically connects once you've set up your device
  • Captive portal (University of Manchester WiFi) Log in using your University credentials
  • The Cloud - A WiFi network for University visitors and delegates
  • Guest access - Provide visiting academics with WiFi access

Campus life

The University of Manchester is large, yet compact enough to give the best of both worlds: a city life and a campus community.

Our campus occupies a large area close to the city centre. It is dominated by grand Victorian and more modern buildings, but also has quiet corners, landscaped gardens, cafes and common rooms where you can relax and spend time with friends. We have places of worship for the majority of faiths.
