Nottingham's first civic college was opened in the city centre in 1881.
In 1948, the college was awarded the Royal Charter and became The University of Nottingham. Just over 50 years later, in 2000, the University opened its first overseas campus in Malaysia and, in 2005, staff and students moved to a purpose-built park campus in Semenyih, Malaysia, close to Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

If you are moving to Nottingham or need accommodation, we have plenty to choose from and provide a range of facilities to help you settle in and feel at home. We have six accommodation sites that are well placed for easy access to all our campuses as well as local amenities and the city centre. You can choose from single study bedrooms in shared flats to en suite self-contained studio apartments. All flats have fully fitted kitchen and dining facilities and are fully furnished with Wi-Fi.
Our extensive library facilities across house more than a million books and journals, as well as four million manuscripts and several thousand electronic journals and books. We have some of the most technologically advanced flexible learning and studying resources in Europe provided through the Learning Hubs in some of our libraries.
There is an extensive computer network on each campus. Computer rooms across the University’s campuses house approximately 1,800 PCs, most of them with 24-hour access. Laptop computers are also available on loan for use in most libraries.
The University’s networked services provide high speed internet access, computer rooms with printing, scanning.
You will have access to health care, dental services, a pharmacy, GPs, physiotherapy, a psychiatrist, a general surgeon and a nurse practitioner in mental health. International students must be pursuing a full-time course of at least six months in duration to be eligible for NHS care.
All our campuses are unique and offer something different. They all provide the Nottingham experience. You can experience the rolling fields of University Park, the modern architecture of Jubilee Campus or the engaging teaching facilities of Sutton Bonington Campus. We also have a number of healthcare sites and two international campuses in China and Malaysia.
Your Students’ Union is located on University Park Campus which is just a short bus journey from Nottingham city centre and local student areas.
As well as an excellent academic reputation, Nottingham is well known for its sporting success and depth in performance sport – with the city recently named as England’s home of sport (2015) by VisitEngland. Whether you’re a casual sports fan, or an elite athlete, Nottingham and the University itself has so much to get involved in.
We have recently invested £40m in our new David Ross Sports Village, due to open at the end of 2016. Among other things, you will have access to a 200-station fitness suite, indoor sprint track and climbing wall.
Our Students’ Union is at the heart of student life. One of the most active in the UK, the Union offers over 200 societies to choose from, all run by students for students – from Dance to the Travel Society; Drum and Bass to Italian; Magic Soc to Cake Soc – there’s a society for literally every taste.
It also supports a range of award-winning student-run groups, including the Nottingham New Theatre, Impact magazine, URN (University Radio Nottingham) and NSTV (Nottingham Student Television Station). There are loads of ways which you can get involved in these groups - whether you’re an aspiring presenter, director, writer, photographer or crew member.A number of our courses are accredited by professional bodies giving you applicable skills to the field you are interested in. Many schools in the Faculty of Social Science at The University of Nottingham have been awarded a national affiliate status, to help increase the number of social science graduates with quantitative skills.
