History
University College Roosevelt is part of Utrecht University and was founded in 2004. UCR was named after various members of the Roosevelt family, who hail from the Province of Zeeland, where UCR is located. The four main academic buildings are aptly named after Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt and Anne Roosevelt.
Education
Transformative learning is an approach to learning and teaching that assumes that learning is not just about acquiring knowledge, but about discovering who you are and want to be or become as a student, as a person, and as a global citizen.
Teaching is all about enabling that adventure of discovery. One of the great attributes of UCR’s Liberal Arts and Sciences approach to undergraduate education is that it fosters and supports such transformations.
Research
One of the distinguishing features of UCR is our emphasis on undergraduate research. Since they believe that studying is essentially about asking the right questions and having the methodological tools to answer them, all of the students take mandatory courses in research methodology.
Moreover, students will be involved in research projects from their first semester onwards. Many of its former students have conducted original research, together with their professors, and presented the results at conferences or in academic journals.
Top reasons to study here

Satisfaction of Study
I like the study system of Netherlands. It is very tidy and everything is well-structured in my school. Student life is little bit limited in Middelburg. However, there are too many activities to do with my friends. I have known lots of international people all around the world and that allow me to look from different perspectives. Furthermore, learning new cultures, new languages and new lifestyles re-shaped my character in a good way. I am satisfied about my bachelor choice because University College Roosevelt offers both science courses and art courses which helps me to focus on different areas while doing my major. I am studying Biomedical Science and Life Sciences({pre-med track) which is under Health, Behavior and Cognition cluster. As I want to study Drug Design & Development, this program fits me very well as I did many different courses that make me competitive in this field such as data science, economics, computer science or business.
Housing services
At University College Roosevelt, all students have to live on campus, primarily in one of four student housing locations, all within the centre of Middelburg. You don’t need to worry about finding a place to live, as your housing is guaranteed for the duration of your studies at UCR.
- In some locations, you will have your own private bedroom but share bathroom and kitchen facilities with 9 to 15 other students.
- In the other locations, you either have your own personal apartment or share a bathroom and kitchen with one other student.
Library services
The library is a great place for UCR students to study and find materials for their research, but it also holds a few copies of each of the books that are used in class.
At the start of your studies in Middelburg, you receive a free library pass from the ZB| Planbureau en Bibliotheek van Zeeland that gives you access to all of these facilities.
Medical services
Your health and well-being are as important to UCR as they are to you, which is why they offer different services to support you.
Students can check out the Intranet for more detailed information about on-campus and community health services (i.e. doctors and crisis services).
- Counsellor
- MoodLift allows you to access free e-health programmes
- Well-Being & Skills Workshops
Campus life
Middelburg is a city that is both busy and vibrant enough to always have something to offer – and quiet and small enough so that you are not constantly distracted from your studies.
Middelburg is the largest city in Zeeland, well-connected by public transport to big cities like Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Antwerp, and merely a half hour bike ride away from one of the many beaches in Zeeland.
Student clubs
Upon coming to UCR, you will automatically become a member of the Roosevelt’s All Students Association (RASA), come into contact with the Academic Affairs Council (AAC), the Housing Affairs Council (HAC), and student social hangout Common House Elliott.
