History
In 1912, the department was transformed into a metallurgical faculty of Katerinoslavsky Mining Institute. In 1930, it acquired the status of an independent institution of higher education and obtained the name of Dnipropetrovsk Metallurgical Institute. In 1993, the higher status of State Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine was gained and fixed by the Resolution of Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
Education
Presently, the National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine is a state institution of higher education with level IV accreditation and developed infrastructure. NMetAU carries out the teaching activity for all qualification degrees (junior specialist, bachelor, specialist and master) in 16 branches and over 60 specialities; instructs university teachers and scientists for higher academic degrees (Ph.D and higher) in 22 specialities; conducts preparatory training and gives a second degree in higher education.
Research
Presently, the National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine instructs around 15,000 students, 175 post-graduate students and 10 scientists, who researches towards the second academic degree of a Doctor (studies after Candidate degree). Around 1,000 teachers and scientists work at NMetAU. The majority of whom possess post-graduate academic degrees (Candidate and Doctor Degrees) and 14% of the teaching staff have doctorates. A Member and a Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine carries out lectures in NMetAU.
Career
The Career Development Center was created with the aim of assisting students and graduates in finding jobs to achieve their career goals, and to assist employers who interested in finding highly qualified personnel. The main functions of the Center:
- formation of an information system about job vacancies in the labor market and a database of student’s and graduate’s resumes who are looking for work;
- development of partnerships with national and foreign organizations-employers and intermediaries (recruiting and personnel agencies), integration of education with the business environment with the active use of the IIB’s potential on the basis of signing cooperation agreements on mutually beneficial conditions;

Library services
Readers are served by 3 subscription cards, 1 reading room, Information and methodological department. The library's book stock is multi-branch and is about 500 thousand copies. It is manned with literature on metallurgy, machine building, chemical technology, economics, information technology, social sciences, and fiction.
Student clubs
Student government emerged at the same time with the establishment of higher education, exactly during the founding of universities in medieval Europe. Throughout the development of the educational system term "university " had different meaning and applied only to the student group and had no relation to teachers .
