The university was established upon the Royal decree dated 2009, which states to make a branch of King Saud University at Al Kharj to an independent university name Al Kharj University. It is a university that is distinguished in education, competitive in research in support of knowledge economy, and effective in partnerships and social responsibility.

The Royal decree dated 2009, which the university was established upon, stated to include all colleges in a number of provinces. In 2011, Rector of the university announced that the university name is changed to be Salman bin Abdul Aziz University. Then, in 2015 King Salman bin Abdul Aziz ordered to change the university’s name to Prince Sattam bin Abdul Aziz University.
