On October 21, (November 1), 1773 Empress Catherine the Great signed a decree on the establishment of the first in Russia higher technical school: the Mining School. The new institution was intentionally called a school so that not only noblemen could be admitted there.
We offer 97 courses covering tens of subject areas. Our broad range of subjects develop students’ practical and technical knowledge, advanced problem-solving skills, prepare them to tackle complex engineering problems with shifting baselines and varying degrees of resources and information. The students coming from all parts of the country and from abroad make up a significant portion of the student population.
Saint-Petersburg Mining University during the times of Russian Empire and later USSR has always been positioning itself not only as educational institution but design engineering office of mineral resources sector as well. Today the total area of training and laboratory complex is more than 240 000 square meters. Academic and research centers (ARC) and Common use centers (CUC) and more than 60 laboratories are situated there.

Mining University provides all successful applicants with visa support. The University sends an official electronic Invitation Letter needed for applying for student visa to the e-mail you indicated in the application form. You will be required to print it and submit it to the Russian Embassy or Consulate.
Mining University has six dormitories. International students live in four of them, all are located on Vasilievsky Island. The University’s training centers are easily walkable from/to all dormitories; in addition, ground transport is also available.
Mining University executives devote much attention to living conditions of students in general and in dormitories in particular. All dormitory buildings have been recently renovated and upgraded. All of them have study rooms, WiFi, computer classes, canteens or cafés, laundry facilities, and gyms. Monthly fee for living in the dormitories is significantly lower than average apartment rent for residencies of similar quality and location.
The Library of Mining University has a rich collection of Russian and foreign books and magazines, engravings, maps, atlases, etc. Each year, new books and other publications supplement the library fund, which presently accounts of approximately 1,200,000 items in mining, geology, metallurgy, natural and technical sciences in Russian and various foreign languages.
Campus of the Mining University are situated in the Heart of Saint-Petersburg on Vasilyevsky Island - one of the most beautiful and the largest of St. Petersburg's islands that was envisaged by Peter the Great as the center of his new capital. All have excellent travel links and are easily accessible through the use of public transport or on foot.
In order to support the constantly growing interest of students in sports activities, in 2006 the Sports Club Gornyak (Miner) was created at the educational institution. The club organizes sections and sports events. Since its inception, the number of sports complexes, sections and coaches at the university has tripled.
The Student Council of Mining University of is one of the forms of student self-government. It was established to ensure the realization of the rights of students to participate in the University management, in solving important issues of students' education and life, as well as in the development of their social activity, patriotic education, support and implementation of social initiatives.
