The HOU was legally founded with article 27, par. 1, pas. a of Act 2083/1992 as an independent and wholly self–governed higher education institute. It operates as a Legal Person of Public Law under the supervision of the Hellenic State, as exercised by the Minister of Education.
The HOU Educational material consists of books, readers, supplementary p/c material and/or CDs and DVDs.The printed material is especially adapted to meet the needs and standards of Distance Education. In the HOU textbooks each chapter clearly states its particular aims and objectives, and also contains lists of key concepts and expected outcomes as well as a synopsis, bibliography and in some cases a guide for further reading.
The HOU's mission is to provide distance education at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. For that purpose, it develops and implements appropriate learning material and methods of teaching. The promotion of scientific research as well as the development of the relevant technology and methodology in the area of distance learning fall within the scope of the HOU's objectives.

The hellenic open university offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in cutting edge scientific areas. The studies are very demanding but the academic staff is very helpful. Everything is well organised.
My overall impression is quite good. It is a distant learning institute.The university offers programmes for people who must balance work, family and other responsibilities. It offers tools which make your study and taking exams easy. The majority of the teaching stuff is brilliant. The disadvantages that I would mention is that I wish it had more eveyday tutoring and not only 1 time per month so students could deepen more into the subject.
The Cinema Studies program has some great professors and interesting subjects but it still has a lot of practical and administrative issues as well as some underqualified professors. Also the workshops need a lot of work to become better. As its a new program, I can see it has potential
