About

History

Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) first opened its doors in 2000 thanks to a collaboration between the Ritsumeikan Trust, Oita Prefecture, and Beppu City. With an entirely new multicultural learning environment consisting of half international students and half Japanese/domestic students, APU’s aim is to provide an international education that leads to the development of global leaders.

Education

APU’s graduate programs have been selected for several prestigious scholarship schemes in recent years. These include the Joint/Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program and the Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program, which provide support to students from member countries to undertake graduate studies at renowned institutions of higher education around the world.

Career

Graduate students have access to and support from a worldwide network which consists of international heads of state, ambassadors and industry leaders (Advisory Committee), distinguished researchers from around the world (Academic Advisors) and institutions associated with APU’s faculty members. This network also includes APU alumni who are spread across the world working in an array of fields and industries. Utilizing this network is indispensable for our students’ careers.

Services

Housing services

  • All graduate students are guaranteed a room in one of APU’s student housing facilities, AP House 4 (APU PLAZA OITA), which will help them adapt to their new life in Japan and to concentrate on their studies. All rooms are equipped with basic facilities, including internet access.
  • If students wish to live in different off-campus housing they can also find other affordable options, as Beppu City is considerably less expensive than other Japanese cities for private apartments and shared student housing. Students can also get assistance in locating and renting accommodations from Creotech, a university-affiliated company.

Medical services

All international students are automatically registered for Japan's National Health Insurance program. In addition, APU  offers a Health Clinic, with medical staff who provide first aid treatment for minor illnesses and injuries. When necessary, students are referred to local medical facilities. APU’s counseling room is also available to support students should they feel any stress or anxiety.

Student Life

Campus life

Studying at APU means you will be residing in Beppu, a mid-sized city in southwest Japan and one of the country’s most visited locations. Your life here will have both excitement, living in a major tourist destination, and tranquility, with beautiful natural surroundings and relaxing hot springs.

Sports facilities

APU's facilities allow you to lead a healthy lifestyle and maintain your physical fitness while pursuing your studies. In our gymnasium, you can enjoy various indoor sports, such as basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, and indoor football. Inside the fitness center, there are over ten different types of training machines, including treadmills, bikes, and free weights. Outdoor facilities include five tennis courts, two multipurpose sports fields, and a basketball court.

Student clubs

The 140+ student-led organizations of APU create countless opportunities for you to test your knowledge in a real-world setting, gain useful skills, make new discoveries, socialize and have fun with friends, and improve your physical fitness. Throughout the school year, APU also designates several “Multicultural Weeks” where students can showcase the languages and cultures of one country or region. Students can the lead as a week organizer or join in these celebrations of world culture as a performer. Each multicultural week ends with a grand show that is streamed live online.
