Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) first opened its doors in 2000 thank to a collaboration between the Ritsumeikan Trust, Oita Prefecture and Beppu City.

With an entirely new multicultural learning environment consisting of half international students and half Japanese/domestic students, APU’s aim was to provide an international education that lead to the development of global leaders, working in a diverse range of fields and industries. In these past fifteen years, this goal has not only been reached as APU now has over 10,000 alumni.


As APU’s graduate programs are offered entirely in English, students are not required to know any Japanese to gain admission. English speaking students come to APU and study their degree in English, are taught by international professors and lecturers, and study alongside English speaking classmates from around the world. Our system has made it possible for outstanding scholars to study in Japan in an unprecedented international learning environment.


Graduate students have access to and support from a worldwide network which consists of international heads of state, ambassadors and industry leaders (Advisory Committee), distinguished researchers from around the world (Academic Advisors) and institutions associated with APU’s faculty members. This network also includes APU alumni who are spread across the world working in an array of fields and industries. Utilizing this network is indispensable for our students’ careers.

Student Office provides support with extracurricular activities, scholarships and also health advice.

Housing services

Incoming international students are required to live on campus at AP House (APU’s on-campus housing) during their first year at APU. AP House allows you to adjust to your new surroundings and make friends from all around the world.

Library services

The library serves as a hub for study materials and other academic information, it also provides students and other library users a place to study and learn together. and learn together.

Medical services

Taking care of your health while you are away from home in a new country is very important. Beppu has an abundance of clean drinking water, fresh air, greenery, parks, sports facilities, gyms, and swimming pools, as well as hot springs, health clinics, and medical centers. In addition, as an APU student you will also have several healthcare services available to you on campus.

The APU campus is a truly multicultural and multilingual environment with nearly half of the student population made up of international students from around the world and an equally diverse faculty. Furthermore, the unique Japanese/English bilingual education system allows students to develop high levels of language proficiency while also removing the language barrier and making it possible for outstanding young people from around the world to study and earn a degree in Japan.

Sports facilities

Our facilities allow you to lead a healthy lifestyle and maintain your physical fitness while pursuing your studies. In our gymnasium, you can enjoy various indoor sports, such as basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, and indoor football. Inside the fitness center, there are over ten different types of training machines, including treadmills, bikes, and free weights. Outdoor facilities include five tennis courts, two multipurpose sports fields, and a basketball court. These are available to students upon reservation.

Student clubs

The APU campus offers endless opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of different cultures. A prime example is the array of club and circle activities students can choose from. Working together on a project with friends of different culture, values and language backgrounds is an integral part of the APU learning style. APU has an enormous range of clubs and circles to get involved with including language and intercultural awareness clubs, and globally-minded student organisations engaged in international problem solving initiatives in Japan and around the world.

APU is a diversified environemnt for international students to both acquire their fundamental and necessary knowledge and develop personal as well as social skills. Especially if you want to experience the Japanese culture, either living or working, APU is a great institution to spend your time and effort studying.
