History
The School of Sociology and Social Policy is a vibrant, diverse and exciting centre for social science teaching and research, which builds on an established history dating back to 1948 and the creation of the Department of Social Administration. That year also saw the appointment of the first UK professor in this field, Professor David Marsh, who joined a team of just five other staff.
Education
The School of Sociology and Social Policy is a vibrant and diverse centre for social science teaching and research, offering a variety of single and joint honours undergraduate programmes in sociology, social policy and criminology.
We offer a variety of taught masters degrees, including Master of Arts (MA), Master of Public Administration (MPA) and Postgraduate Diplomas (PGDip). At doctoral level, we offer professional doctorates in Public Policy and in Public Management, in addition to our research-focused PhD programme.
Research
The School of Sociology and Social Policy delivers high-quality research across eight thematic areas. We are constantly evaluating our research themes with a view to identifying novel areas, collaborations and partnerships, to develop research that addresses the needs of an ever-changing and challenging world.
Career
Our graduates follow a wide range of pathways, including employment in healthcare, welfare and education; administration, management, marketing and IT roles; and graduate training placements with leading organisations. Recent graduate employers include the BBC, Ministry of Justice and Stonewall.
Most of our social work graduates obtain employment as qualified professionals in local authority children's or adult services, with destinations including Derby City Council, Framework Housing Association and Nottinghamshire County Council.
