History
When it opened, the institution was called “The St. George Stake Academy.” It offered three years of high school and in 1912 the fourth year was added, allowing students to graduate from high school. In 1914, a year of teacher preparation was added and in 1916 the second year of college courses were begun. As a consequence of those changes, the school’s name was changed to “Dixie Normal College.”
Education
The University was built upon a rich pioneering tradition of sacrifice, determination and generosity that is still embraced by the campus community today. With the motto “active learning. active life.” Dixie State provides personalized and engaged learning experiences under the direction of skilled and devoted faculty and staff and is on the forefront of technology, health education, and entrepreneurship and incorporates cutting-edge learning practices across all disciplines.
Research
All undergraduate students constantly conduct research, using library holdings, laboratory experiments, clinical studies, and interviews with experts to complete the projects their professors assign them each semester.
Undergraduate Research, however, encourages students to conduct involved research on single topics over extended periods and then present their findings in formal settings, such as conferences. Typically, the students pursuing these projects work closely with faculty mentors who not only provide their scholarly expertise but also practical advice on preparing and delivering conference presentations.
Career
The Career Center introduces students to employers through Career and Job Fairs, Career Tours, Corporate Night and employer information sessions. Many students work part-time or full-time while attending the University. Students that are currently working can sign up for Co-op and receive credit for their work experience. The Career Center offers various forms of assistance to students seeking employment. Internships are one of the best ways to gain experience and connect with employers.
