Central State University aspires to be a premier institution of excellence in teaching and learning that embraces diversity and produces graduates with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to make valuable contributions in a global society.

History

Central State University’s history begins with our parent institution Wilberforce University, named in honor of the great abolitionist William Wilberforce. Established at Tawawa Springs, Ohio in 1856, it is affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church and is one of the oldest Black-administered institutions of higher education in the nation.

Education

In July 2012, Central State welcomed its eighth president, Dr. Cynthia Jackson-Hammond. Under this administration, six compelling priorities for the University have been established: a quality academic experience; targeted student enrollment; improved retention rates; reduced time to degree; production of graduates with the knowledge, skills and dispositions for advanced studies and careers; and efficient and effective institutional operations

Central State University embraces change; but one thing that has not changed is its continuing commitment to providing an excellent, affordable education to residents of Ohio and beyond. Our future is bright!

Research

Today, as an 1890 Land-Grant Institution, Central State University is expanding Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Agriculture (STEM-Ag) academic programming, research and education; developing partnerships within Ohio’s agricultural industry; enhancing facilities; and engaging the local communities, all for the future growth and sustainability of the University.

Career

Career Services at Central State University (CSU) is an essential office on our campus, serving as a resource to help students evaluate their career options, plan for their future, and achieve success. As a unit within the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Career Services acts as a bridge to opportunities beyond the university.  Career Services provides more than just assistance to help a student decide on a major or what job they will secure upon graduation, but it functions as a support system to guide students on how to strategically plan their career path through the use of counseling, self-assessment tools, and other comprehensive resources.

Student services

Our office utilizes the university tenets – Service, Protocol, Civility as its guide for connecting student passions and purpose to their collegiate experience. Our office works to promote opportunities for campus and community involvement through student organizations, leadership training and experiences, and community service. Our aim is to provide students with an out of the classroom experience that builds global leaders and responsibility citizens.

Housing services

Our on campus housing consists of eight residence halls which house over 1,200 students. Living in one of the residence halls at Central State University is an important component of a student's total learning experience. It provides a unique opportunity for students to participate in campus life to the fullest extent possible because of its proximity to cultural, intellectual, and social events. The idea of residence hall living is to create and maintain an environment that is conducive to the total development of each member of the community.

On-campus living provides a variety of challenges and opportunities for each student resident. In addition, every resident must respect the needs and concerns of others.

Library services

The Hallie Q. Brown Memorial Library contains the University's library collections of more than 197,400 volumes, over 845,400 pieces of microfiche and microfilm, 383 current periodical titles, 28,400 bound volumes of periodicals, and collections of phonograph records, tapes, CDs, DVDs, and film. E-books account for over 21,000 and E-journals over 41,000.

ICT services

The Information Technology & Services Department's Helpdesk provides a central point of contact for faculty, staff and students for questions, problem reports, service requests and inquiries for University computer systems and communications technologies at CSU.

Medical services

Central State University’s vision is to provide health and wellness services that enhance the educational experience of our students in a supportive and professional environment.
