History
New College was conceived during the late 1950s, and founded in 1960 as a private college by local civic leaders for academically talented students. Financial assistance was provided by the Board of Homeland Missions of the United Church of Christ.George F. Baughman served as the first president from 1961 to 1965.
Education
We offer nearly 40 different Areas of Concentration (Majors), including several established interdisciplinary concentrations.
In the first year, students will study statistics and computer science tools used for data analysis using data from corporate partners. In the second year, students will work on group software-based projects using real data from industry and research organizations, with a final semester of paid internships at partner institutions.
Research
While you’ll spend a lot of time poring over texts, researching, reading and writing, you’ll also have plenty of opportunities to venture beyond the page and engage in immersion projects both on and off campus. Internships, grants, on-site independent projects and collaborative research with your professors will give you the chance to expand your horizons. You’ll be able to engage in hands-on learning to make your academic studies come to life. This “real world” experience, coupled with classroom learning, tutorials and independent study projects, enriches your New College academic experience. It’s what makes New College a totally unique place.

Student services
New College’s Pei Campus is the center of residential life, with eight out of a total of nine residence halls located there. Along with the dorms, Hamilton “Ham” Center, Palm Court, the Fitness Center and other recreational facilities form a student village where academics and campus life seamlessly intertwine and “learning occurs around the clock.”
Housing services
Living on campus at New College gives you the opportunity to be fully engaged in student life. New College students enjoy a strong sense of camaraderie and community unique to our campus.
Our campus community is so important to our student success that New College is designated as an intentional residential college, and, as such, requires all students to live in the residence halls unless they have been granted exceptions or waivers. This on-campus requirement includes a meal plan component.
Library services
The Jane Bancroft Cook Library is a joint-use library for both New College students, and the University of South Florida's Sarasota-Manatee campus. The local library collection has several hundred thousand items and access to over 10 million items through the State University Libraries system. The library also has a large collection of electronic resources available through the USF library system.
Medical services
We strive to provide quality care to our students and will help students bridge services to the community if one’s needs exceed the scope of center care. Our mission is to promote healthy choices and self-care through both traditional medical services, as well as, preventative and proactive services such as free periodic HIV testing.
