History
We were founded in 1837. Our founding document opposed slavery in all forms -- physical, spiritual, intellectual -- and declared that the College would be accessible to students regardless of their financial means, regardless of their race. This was a radical idea at the time. Our roots matter. Our first president stood up in opposition to discrimination against women.
Education
With five new minors in arts administration, astronomy, design, health studies, and statistics, we now offer more than 60 courses of study, including 42 majors and 51 minors in the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences. We also have nine pre-professional and cooperative programs, including business, engineering, and law.
Research
Knox has a longstanding (and pioneering) commitment to supporting advanced student research and creative work—intensive, long-term projects that go beyond coursework. They might be independent studies under the mentorship of a professor; they might be collaborative projects between a few students or between students and a professor; they might happen in a lab, on a stage, in a library; they might happen in a neighborhood, on a farm, on a glacier; they might happen in Galesburg or Chicago or on another continent.
Career
Things that every Knox graduate carries with them after Knox:
- A resume packed with tangible experience—internships, study abroad, service, leadership.
- The ability to live and work and collaborate with people from all over the world who don't think or act like you. In other words: the ability to be an effective member of the 21st century.
- The ability to come up with big, bold ideas—and then find small, concrete, profound ways to bring them to life.
- The ability to be both critical-minded and constructive; to be both analytical and action-oriented; to be both idealistic and pragmatic; to be both self-motivated and community-minded.

Nice little college
Knox was a great college back in my time. The college is located in a quaint town of Galesburg and it has access to the train station that will take you all the way to Chicago or to California. The students are all very friendly and open to discussions and new ideas. I believe now the population of the international body has increased four folds and this has definitely changed the dynamics of the whole campus. The main changes would be a lack of competitive selection, increased in groupism and increase in overall population. Nevertheless, I believe Knox is still a good college where they offer a robust liberal arts education.
Knox review
Small campus, Professors are really good, classes are very intimate, pretty good experience overall
Student services
- The Office of Student Development oversees programs and resources for residential and campus life;
- Educational Centers offer academic and co-curricular programs to enhance classroom studies;
- Cultural Centers provide focused resources for multicultural and international students and expand the horizons of all students.
Housing services
Here's your chance to learn more about our residences. They're divided into three categories:
- Residence halls. The majority of students live in residence halls. Most of the halls are arranged in suites-groups of single and double bedrooms that open onto a shared living space. This turns out to be an excellent way to instantly assemble a small group of friends.
- Apartments and townhouses. These are available only to upperclassmen through a lottery system.
- Houses. These are, yes, actual houses, where a dozen or so students live together. They include five fraternities, four cultural centers, and theme houses.
Library services
Knox College has two libraries, Seymour Library and the Science-Mathematics Library. The Knox College Library is a member of the RAILS Library System and a governing member of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) and is an active participant in interlibrary loan programs serving public, school, and academic libraries throughout Illinois.
ICT services
Information Technology Services (ITS) is devoted to creating an easy to use and welcoming computing environment for all -- students, faculty, and staff. ITS maintains the campus wired and wireless computer network, the campus computer labs, the administrative computing system, and the telephone and television systems serving the entire campus.
Medical services
Knox College provides primary health care services to all registered students as part of their health services fee. Health Services can order off-campus testing as needed at one of the local hospitals. The cost of off-campus lab testing, x-rays, other tests and prescriptions are the student's responsibility.
Campus life
The Knox campus is home for the 1,200 students who live in the residence halls and nearby apartments, eat in the student union, study in the libraries, labs and classrooms, work in campus offices, play in the gymnasiums, athletic fields, and game areas, and perform in the theatres and recital halls. It is home also to the hundreds of faculty members, administrative and support staff who spend long hours here every day meeting the many needs of Knox students.
Sports facilities
More than half of our students participate in some kind of organized athletic activity, from club sports (water polo, fencing, women's rugby); to intramurals (basketball, indoor soccer, softball, volleyball); to fitness classes organized and taught by students (a few recent examples: Balinese dancing, yoga). And don't forget about our 20 NCAA Division III teams.
Great equipment and facilities make all that movement possible. Our 13,000-square-foot E. & L. Andrew Fitness Center features a cardio exercise area, a free weight training area, and a fitness studio. We also have indoor and outdoor tracks; baseball, softball, football, and soccer fields; tennis courts; and a pool.
Student clubs
The one quality that binds our 100+ student organizations is that they are all student-driven. Students create and run organizations in response to interests and needs.
Some clubs focus on academic disciplines such as chemistry or physics. Others, such as Common Ground, Students for Sustainability, and Allied Blacks for Liberty and Equality focus on identity, culture, and politics. And, our successful club-level Ultimate Frisbee team, or our music, dance, and performance ensembles provide an athletic and creative energy that characterizes Knox.
Accreditation
Knox College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), “an independent corporation that was founded in 1895 as one of six regional institutional accreditors in the United States.
