Cornell College About

Ingenuity is a tradition at Cornell College. Historically Cornell has embraced the progressive engine that keeps the liberal arts relevant to today's students and the workplaces where they will become influencers. It’s why Cornellians journey along a different path, following the rhythm of the block plan, allowing their curiosity to lead the way One Course At A Time.

History

Founded in 1865 By Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White.Opened in 1868. Morrill Hall was the first building constructed on the main Ithaca campus, which today includes 608 buildings on more than 2000 acres.

Education

We choose critical inquiry over echo chambers in pursuit of individual and community growth.

We listen to each other with the intent of understanding one another. We share knowledge with one another knowing that no single individual has all the answers. We respect the inherent dignity and worth of every person. We practice empathy in order to understand the feelings, experiences, and perspectives of each other.

Research

Faculty and students conduct research on-campus and off-campus, in class and outside of class. With a faculty to student ratio of 1:12, you can work collaboratively with faculty on their research projects or develop your own research project under faculty mentorship. You’ll be gaining valuable graduate level research experience as an undergrad.

Student services

As the main office for the division, we are staffed by the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Dean of Students, and an Administrative Assistant.  The office oversees the various departments that make up the division, and directly assists students in numerous ways, including:

  • providing advice and guidance for all students
  • advocating for student and campus community interests
  • overseeing and supporting programs, services and staff in the Division of Student Affairs
  • maintaining and distributing the Compass student handbook
  • investigating complaints of inappropriate behavior and administering the student judicial system

Housing services

Residential living is central to the learning environment for all Cornell College students. Virtually all student needs can be met through the standard room selection process and the standard meal plan options. However, students with conditions whose needs cannot be met through this process may request special housing or meal plan consideration.

Medical services

The health center is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  After hours, call (319) 895-4292 for information, including how to contact the physician on call.

Campus life

The college is located in Mount Vernon, Iowa, a town whose urban fringe atmosphere brings the best of the city into a small town venue with art festivals, popular local restaurants and cafés, and quirky boutiques. Mount Vernon’s mix of historic buildings and creative flair earned it accolades as one of “America's Coolest Small Towns” by Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travelmagazine.

Sports facilities

The Roe Howard Fitness Center is located on the middle level of the Thomas Commons, underneath the stairs, near the Berry Career Institute. Students can access the fitness center with their student ID.

Student clubs

Finding balance, having fun, and being an active part of the community are important to the Cornell experience. Students organize and lead dozens of varied groups each year.

The following groups are currently active.

Academics

  • Chemistry Interest Group
  • Cornell College Computing Club (C4)
  • Engineering Club
  • French Club
  • Geology Club
