UNC Asheville offers an education that is adaptive, affordable, and endlessly relevant as the only liberal arts and sciences campus in the University of North Carolina System. Our small class size, award-winning faculty and a nationally acclaimed undergraduate research program foster connections between curiosity and critical thinking, courage and challenge, opportunity and responsibility.

History

UNC Asheville was founded in 1927 as Buncombe County Junior College, part of the Buncombe County public school system. In 1930 the school merged with the College of the City of Asheville (founded in 1928) to form Biltmore Junior College. In 1934 the college was renamed Biltmore College and placed in the control of a board of trustees.

Education

UNC Asheville, the headquarters of the Council of Liberal Arts and Colleges (COPLAC), offers more than 30 majors leading to the bachelor of arts, bachelor of science and bachelor of fine arts degrees. UNC Asheville also awards a Master of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Research

About 70 percent of students complete original research in their field of study through the university’s nationally recognized Undergraduate Research Program. UNC Asheville founded the National Conference on Undergraduate Research more than 30 years ago.

Career

The Career Center supports the liberal arts mission of UNC Asheville by leading the community in career education. We engage students from their first semester on campus to explore, think critically, make informed decisions, develop relationships, and define their own success in life and work. We accomplish our vision and mission through curriculum integration, comprehensive career coaching, and the facilitation of meaningful relationships between students, employers, and alumni.
