History
Founded in 1824, Kenyon is the oldest private college in Ohio. The small college originally educated all-male clergymen for frontier America, but it soon became a highly regarded seat of classical education whose graduates included statesmen such as U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes.
Education
Kenyon’s curriculum covers the full range of academic fields. There are 18 departments, most of them focusing on a single traditional discipline—philosophy, physics, and so on. In addition, we offer 13 interdisciplinary programs, reflecting the academic reality that important insights often draw on multiple fields. So if you decide to study neuroscience, you will take classes in biology, chemistry, and psychology. If your interest is in Asian and Middle East studies, you’ll get the perspectives of such fields as art, history, literature, and religious studies.
Research
Research and recreation happily coexist in this 480-acre nature preserve, which encompasses forest, prairie, and wetland habitats near the Kokosing River. The lands include eight miles of scenic hiking trails as well as tranquil gardens, as well as plenty of space for students to enjoy campfires and star-gazing sessions.
Career
Whether you have a good idea of what you want to do or are just starting to explore the possibilities, Kenyon has the staff and the resources you need to pursue your interests. Beginning in your very first year, the Career Development Office can help you learn about career opportunities, pursue internships and externships and network with alumni, plan a strategy for a job search and sharpen skills for negotiating the market.

Student services
The Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities is dedicated to promoting an environment conducive to personal growth in the areas of civility, integrity and decision making. Through contact with the Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities, students will be aware of the interconnectivity of their actions and the Kenyon Community.
Housing services
It’s where you hang out, banter, make friends, make music, organize mayhem, improvise parties, snack, study, and sleep. Above all, you choose. Just as you choose your life at Kenyon in big philosophical ways, you have a lot of choices about how you live literally - as in, housing. You can live in one of the historic stone residence halls or a modern apartment with its own kitchen. You can choose a coed or single-sex floor. You can live in a “program house” (like the environmental center), or get a group together for “theme housing.” And the themes are always changing (hiking, Buddhist meditation, creative writing), because they depend on you. Your space. Your choice.
Library services
LBIS librarians and staff develop, manage, and house Kenyon’s collection of print, audio-visual, and electronic materials; including books, DVDs, and databases. In addition to our main collection, we also maintain Kenyon’s unique and historical collections: the Kenyon College Archives, Digital Kenyon, and Special Collections.
Medical services
The Health and Counseling Center has regular hours and encourages individual appointments. Our staff includes a physician as well as nurses and nurse practitioners. They can address a full spectrum of medical issues. The counseling staff includes professionals with a range of specialty areas, and we try to match each student with the counselor who can best meet his or her needs.
Campus life
Three things to know about Gambier:
- Everyone’s here.
- Everything you need is here.
- What you want is nearby. Nestled in the heart of Kenyon’s hilltop campus, Gambier is bordered by the scenic Kokosing River and surrounded by the gently rolling hills of Ohio countryside. Yet it’s just minutes from stores, hotels and restaurants in the historic town of Mount Vernon and only an hour’s drive from Columbus, the capital of Ohio and the 15th largest city in the U.S.
Sports facilities
The Kenyon College sports information department is here to meet the needs of the media, opposing sports information offices, as well as Kenyon alumni, parents, students, and fans. The department carries out the daily maintenance of the official Kenyon College athletics website and, when possible, provides live coverage of home athletics events. Members of the department coordinate photography and video, provide in-game statistics, write game releases and special features, produce athletics publications, promote the Lords and Ladies through various social media outlets and assist the media in its coverage of Kenyon athletics.
Student clubs
Life at Kenyon isn’t just about what you do in the classroom. With more than 150 student clubs and organizations, life outside the classroom can be just as engaging — take up horseback riding, work for the student newspaper, volunteer or be part of student government. Enrich your Kenyon experience!
Accreditation
Kenyon College is accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
