The first Fort Lewis army post was constructed in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, in 1878, and was relocated in 1880 to Hesperus, Colorado, on the southern slopes of the La Plata Mountains. In 1891, Fort Lewis was decommissioned and converted into a federal, off-reservation boarding school.

Overall a good school, but has moments that can really REALLY screw you over. Also a smallish town, not too many opportunities. When it comes to the social scene, most of it is off campus. There are club and outreach programs, but getting interaction from students for anything is an uphill challenge. Students are very excited about parties, and its not hard to hear about one or two parties happening, and being a small town the relationship with the town, students, and police are all pleasant. That being said, engaging with academia is difficult but the people are social.
It is a private school. It is easy for students to have an interaction with the other students and professors, as classes are small. During these two years, I had the opportunity to really improve my interpreting and translation skills. In the university, there is a classroom with booths, which is very good also to practice when lectures are over.
It was a good college with great teachers. It gave a lot of help to those who needed it and gave out a lot of opportunity to students. My experience at the fort was a positive one, I was given helped by the school and the teachers while I was studying there. While my time there was short, I got a lot of experience in my field and got to express myself while there.

Our eight residential communities include two apartment complexes, family housing, gender-inclusive housing, the Adventure House Living-Learning Community and our Faculty in Residence program, in addition to singles, doubles, and suites.
The library includes material pertaining to the environment, sustainability, social justice, agriculture, native and indigenous cultures and practices, and much more! It is a satellite branch of the Fort Lewis College John F. Reed Library and is included in the FLC library catalog.

On a sunny day, of which we have no shortage in Durango, head outside to the tennis courts or the frisbee golf course.
