In order to provide the masses of refugees some kind of education, Mary Peake, a free Negro, held her first class, which consisted of about twenty students, on September 17, 1861 under a simple oak tree. This tree would later be known as the Emancipation Oak. Today, the Emancipation Oak still stands on the Hampton University campus as a lasting symbol of the promise of education for all.

My experience at Hampton University has been wonderful. Beyond academics, the campus's various scenic spots are steeped in significant history. The Division of Student Affairs supports the academic mission of Hampton University by providing services which assist students in identifying, clarifying, and achieving their educational goals. In addition to direct assistance to students, the Division is charged with developing programming which enhances the learning environment on campus and improves the quality of life for students and others.
With a stylish mix of 24 modern and historic residence halls, living on the Hampton University campus is as comfortable as it is fulfilling. Whether you're overlooking the Hampton River or in the middle of campus, you'll find a wide variety of spacious fully-equipped rooms to choose from. Plus, when you're living on campus, you're already close to exciting university sporting and cultural events.
There are currently six libraries under the Hampton University library structure, four of which are located on Hampton University's main campus. The William R. and Norma B. Harvey library is the main academic library. The 125,000 square foot building is designed to deliver the library's services and resources to the academic community in the most efficient way.
The Center for Information Technology (CIT) provides technology leadership and support to Hampton University. In its unique role, the CIT serves as the primary source of information technology services and support for students, faculty, staff, and researchers. The Center for Information Technology offices are located on the fifth floor of the William R. & Norma B. Harvey Library.
The Hampton University Health Center provides acute care services by a physician or nurse practitioner during clinic hours. A current validated student I.D. and the completion of a student information form are required on each visit prior to receiving medical care.
