History
Indiana State University was created on December 20,1865, pursuant to an Indiana statute, and was originally known as the Indiana State Normal School. Its primary mission was to prepare teachers for the common schools of Indiana. Indiana State Normal School awarded its first baccalaureate degrees in 1908; master’s degrees were granted in 1928.

Student services
The Office of Student Activities & Organizations empowers Indiana State University students to achieve academic excellence, develop leadership skills, and actively engage in the campus community through service and activities. They provide an array of opportunities for meaningful engagement and interactions across campus—from academic collaborations, leadership initiatives, and student-led events to community-driven programs—all designed to foster a strong sense of belonging and shared purpose.
Housing services
You will live and learn right on campus, where you’re within walking distance of class, dining, recreational activities, campus events, and more fun. All first-year students are required to live on campus or be granted a housing exception.
Indiana State offers several residential meal plans to meet your dining needs. Students who live in a residence hall are required to have a residential meal plan. Students who live in 500 Wabash or University Apartments are not required to have a meal plan, but they may opt into one of the residential plans or the optional apartment meal plan.
ICT services
Indiana State maintains a robust application infrastructure centered around Microsoft technologies. As such, Windows-based computers will allow for the greatest ease-of-use on campus. However, experienced Mac users will be fully supported on their Apple devices, as well. If you have mostly used Windows or Chromebook devices in the past, we recommend bringing a Windows-based laptop for academics.
Medical services
The ISU Health Center (UAP Clinic) at Indiana State University provides a range of services for students and employees. These include COVID-19 symptomatic testing, treatment for acute injuries, allergy shots, asthma and COPD care, immunizations, and management of various health issues such as fever, headaches, and sore throats.
Campus life
Indiana State is located in historic downtown Terre Haute, just 60 miles southwest of Indianapolis and an easy day trip from several other states and metropolitan areas. There is a lot to see and do here, from downtown shopping and dining to community festivals, cultural events, concerts, and many outdoor activities. And don’t forget our D-I Sycamore Athletics!

Student organizations are an essential part of college life, offering students a wide range of opportunities to connect, learn, and grow outside the classroom. These groups vary in focus and can include academic clubs, cultural associations, service organizations, political groups, recreational and sports clubs, performing arts groups, and special interest clubs such as those focused on sustainability, gaming, or entrepreneurship.

The University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Academic programs across the colleges are accredited by more than 30 different agencies. In addition, the University holds institutional membership in at least ten major national associations.
