The School provides a growing portfolio of flexible, part-time, postgraduate degrees, along with the graduate entry Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme and a number of courses designed for dental care professionals. The focus is on continuing professional development, allowing general dental practitioners the opportunity to further their skills and education in their chosen area of interest, whilst maintaining their clinical practice. The School works in conjunction with governing dental bodies, ensuring that the curriculum offered facilitates transferable skill development.

Taught sessions are held at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, in purpose-built facilities incorporating a phantom-head training area as well as dedicated lecture and seminar rooms. As one of only a few universities nationally to boast its own on-campus dental clinic, we are fully equipped to give all dental students direct access to practical experience in high-end dental work, within the institution. The School offers the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree which in the UK is a 5 year programme. There is a standard entry pathway and a graduate entry pathway. Currently all 32 places are available as a graduate entry pathway, specifically designed for students who already have a degree in a relevant biomedical subject. Applicants to the graduate entry pathway must demonstrate that their prior formal qualifications have covered the relevant biomedical subjects, which will allow direct entry to Year 2 of the course (2nd BDS). On the graduate entry pathway students spend the first year (2nd BDS) on the Preston Campus and are subsequently based in one of the four North West Dental Education Centres (DECs), which are equipped with brand new state-of-the-art facilities, for their clinical experience.

The aim of the School of Medicine and Dentistry is to provide high-quality research evidence to inform and guide clinical practice and health policy and make a difference to the experience of patients and the public. There are three main streams of research: oral and dental translational research, applied public health and epidemiology and clinical education and training.

BDS students spend Year 1 at the Preston Campus learning clinical skills in one of the most modern manikin head rooms in Europe, equipped with state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment. In addition to the simulator lab there are five fully functional surgeries for the students to practice all aspects of dental care in a surgery that is almost identical to the ones they will work in the Dental Education Centres (DECs) in Years 2-4.

Postgraduate taught sessions are held at the University’s Preston Campus, in purpose-built facilities incorporating a phantom-head training area as well as dedicated lecture and seminar rooms. Now, as one of only a few universities nationally to boast its own on-campus dental clinic, we are fully equipped to give postgraduate students direct access to practical experience in high-end dental work, within the institution.
