On the 20th of March 1930 it was decided to split MVTU into five specialised engineering schools, among which there also was Higher Aeromechanical School (VAMU). In the spring of 1930 the first cohort of students was enrolled in the school. The number of students at this period was about 450. The classes were held in two and even three shifts.
MAI is constantly in touch with industry and takes part in all major projects of its partners. MAI collaborates with Russian and foreign corporations and organizations such as the United Aircraft Corporation, the state corporations “Roscosmos” and “Rostec”, COMAC, Safran, ENAC, BrahMos Aerospace, HAL, and others. 120 cooperation contracts for research and innovation activities were signed.

MAI campus includes 9 dormitory buildings with a total number of 7020 beds. The area of the dormitories is 79,541 sq. m. The dormitory buildings are equipped with laundry rooms, cooking facilities, bicycle storage rooms, etc. offering a comfort stay for students. Wi-Fi internet access is free.
MAI scientific and technical library provides students with an extensive range of educational, methodical, fiction literature, as well as publications in journals. The library has a unique collection of literature, amounting to more than 3 million copies of books. It received 26 500 copies of books last year. STL operates an electronic library of full-text (2973 editions).
It is located in the building of one of the dormitories (K. Tsaryova 12/ 3 Corps campus). Students can receive adequate medical care here. Accommodation in comfortable double or triple rooms under the supervision of medical staff is organized. Half board meals (lunch and dinner), physiotherapy, dentistry, psychotherapy, massages, EHF-therapy, ECG, physical therapy, inhalation, solarium, juice bar.
The campus of Moscow Aviation Institute is a unique city infrastructure, the territory of which combines learning classrooms and buildings enabling a full-fledged organization of the educational process. There are research centers, numerous laboratories and resource centers for advanced technologies development, design bureaus (including student ones) and experimental pilot plant for testing prototypes and accomplishing research projects. Each MAI student has an opportunity to join a sports clubs. There are about 50 clubs (listed below). In total there are about 2 000 people in the sports clubs. The University regularly holds inter-faculty sports days, sports competitions, relay races, etc.There are more than 60 Olympic, World and Europe Champions among MAI athletes. MAI teams in rowing, basketball, volleyball, handball, rugby, hockey, tourism, as well as individual athletes have been repeatedly becoming Champions of the USSR and Russia, winners of international, Russian and Moscow competitions.
