Royal Tropical Institute (KIT)

KIT Royal Tropical Institute  is an independent centre of expertise, education, intercultural cooperation and hospitality dedicated to sustainable development.

KIT was founded in 1910 as the ‘Colonial Institute’ to study the tropics and to promote trade and industry in the colonial territories of the Netherlands. It was founded on the initiative of a number of large companies, with government support, making it an early example of a public-private partnership.

Based on a national heritage site in Amsterdam, KIT focuses on key areas where it can make a difference: Gender, Global Health, Intercultural Communication and Sustainable Economic Development.

As a knowledge institute KIT Royal Tropical Institute compiles, analyses and develops new knowledge about health systems, sustainable economic development and gender, and supports others in using this knowledge for sustainable change.

An imposing ceiling, a historical mural and state of the art technology. The Queen Máxima Hall is perfect for plenary sessions, knowledge exchange and conferences.

The grandeur of our conference location is nowhere as tangible as in the Marble Hall. The hall – also the entrance of the building – lies central to all other meeting rooms.
