The University of Veterinary Medicine in Košice was established in 1949. With the introduction of a new study programme in Pharmacy, the university received the name University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice in 2010.
Nowadays the university offers two study programmes in English language: 6-year programme for secondary-school graduates and 4-year post BSc. programme for bachelors in agricultural, veterinary or biological sciences, both leading to the title of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM).
Student dormitories offer accommodation and dining in two buildings located some 500 metres from the university campus. The facilities offer 414 fully furnished rooms and are equipped with a free Internet connection.

The study programmes are provided by 11 departments, 5 clinics, University Veterinary Hospital and university special facilities, which ensure high level of practical preparation and permanent contact with animals.
The complex of dormitories includes sports fields, a gymnasium and two fitness centres. TJ Slávia UVMP Sports Club consists of 5 competitive departments - equestrian, dog-showing, canoeing, basketball and archery – they have successfully performed on all levels of competition, from school to the European and world championships. In the area of community recreational sport, the following activities are organised by the Sports club: strength conditioning, aerobics, football, floorball and volleyball, orienteering, table tennis, water sports and hiking.
Students have an opportunity to get involved in activities of various interest clubs: Aqua Terra Club, Cynological Club DARCO, Hunting cynology club, Breeder´s club, Falconry and raptor rehabilitation club, Bee breeder´s club, Small mammal and exotic bird breeder´s club, UVMP sport clubs, etc.
High level of scientific, research and educational activities of the university are permanently and repeatedly evaluated by accreditation bodies for veterinary education establishments on the national and international level. Following the evaluation by the Education Committee of EAEVE (European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education), the UVMP in Košice received a confirmation that General Veterinary Medicine study programme complies with requirements of EU Directives concerning education of veterinary graduates and practitioners. According to the Standards and based on the educational requirements of the EC Directive 2005/36, Article 38, the UVMP in Košice is an approved and accredited EAEVE/FVE Establishment.
