Overview

The program in Biodiversity, Evolution, Ecology at Freie Universität Berlin teaches students professional methods of collecting, evaluating, and interpreting data on evolution, ecology, and biodiversity. The goal of the program is to provide students with a thorough understanding of complex ecological and evolutionary processes. 

Alongside theoretical fundamentals, students are introduced to the methods used in modern and traditional research in the fields of biodiversity, ecology, and evolutionary biology. By including curatorial elements at institutions that maintain collections and large-scale research institutions, the program offers students a way to earn particularly high qualifications.

Collaborative Research at the Institute of Biology
  • The Institute of Biology is characterized by a lively exchange with other institutes of the BCP department and the Berlin research landscape. This is reflected in the participation in many interdisciplinary research alliances, such as excellence clusters, graduate schools, special research areas, research groups, Research Training Groups (GRKs), BMBF research alliances and priority programmes.
  • At the national level, there is close cooperation with external research institutions such as Helmholtz Centres, Leibniz and Max Planck Institutes and federal institutes (BAM, BfR, etc.). In addition, the institute cooperates in numerous projects with other Berlin universities, the University of Potsdam, the partner university LMU Munich and many other German universities.

General Requirements

  • Bachelor´s degree in biology, Earth sciences, horticulture, forest sciences, agricultural science, bioinformatics, or veterinary medicine, with proof of completion of the modules "Systematics and Evolution of Plants, Animals and Fungi and Ecology", or equivalent modules, with at least 30 credits of biological content, 18 credits of which must have been earned in the abovementioned modules or equivalent modules.
  • Proof of English language skills (level B2 CEFR) for applicants whose first language is not English and whose degree was not obtained at an institution of higher education where English was the language of instruction.
